I have always loved science ever since I was a kid. My first ever science presentation was on the planet Venus, and the knowledge I gained from researching has stuck with me ever since. Growing up in a small town in the northernmost parts of Montana also gave me access to a dark night sky where I could experience meteor showers, clear views of the constellations, and even the Aurora Borealis. High school brought on higher levels of learning in relation to science, where I discovered a love for physics and math. To this day, I still find myself in awe at the night sky and find the connection between science, math, and the universe fascinating and exciting. I am always teaching myself new astronomy facts and concepts, and hope to continue my learning as a teacher of math and science.

Self as a Teacher of My Discipline

I believe my knowledge in the content of my discipline will be a strength in my teaching. I am passionate about what I teach and about the process of teaching. I have always loved to connect with people and share my passions with them, and teaching has become my favorite way of doing that. However, I find myself at a loss when the people I connect with don't share those same passions, or they are unmotivated to learn. Connecting with students that are unmotivated or uninterested to learn is a struggle that I have to overcome. As a teacher, a goal of mine is to get students excited and passionate about what they're learning, which is often times easier said than done.

Definition of Disciplinary Literacy

Disciplinary literacy is the ability to comprehend, read, write, produce, and analyze within a specific discipline. It is the skills required to understand content-specific texts, such as a math document, an argumentative essay, scientific research reports, and history textbooks. Each discipline approaches their reading and writing differently. Skills that students learn in a literature analysis course most likely won't apply when reading a scientific report in a biology course.

Disciplinary Literacy in My Future Classroom

Disciplinary literacy should always be taken into consideration when assessing student readiness for content. Teachers shouldn't assume that students know how to interact with the texts of a specific course on the first day. While most kids are taught general literacy skills, those won't always apply in every class. As a math and science teacher, it is my responsibility to ensure that students are prepared to read and write like mathematicians and scientists.

Difficulties of Disciplinary Literacy

Since students are often not introduced to various discipline specific literacy skills until later in their educational journeys, this may cause resistance and challenges within the classroom. I remember being in college when I was asked to give a presentation in a science class. The only instructions I was given were to choose a prompt from a list and create a powerpoint presentation that's at least 10 minutes. I was terrified because I had only ever given presentations in English and Humanities courses. I had no idea how to present anything in a science course, and it was my first introduction to it. I imagine this may be what many students feel like when introduced to new ways of learning. It's important that I ensure students have the skills needed to perform well within a specific discipline, without making assumptions about their prior knowledge.
