It is believed that knowledge rather than being innate, is constructed built on from prior knowledge as that knowledge influences what new or modified knowledge the learner will construct from a new learning experience. Learning is an active process rather than being a passive process, this means that teachers see learners as ‘empty vessels’ that can be filled with knowledge, and it can be done socially as learning is social even though all learners have their own distinctive point of view.

 

Connectivism 

It is believed that learners create their own knowledge through understanding their experiences. The learner is not viewed as an empty vessel but rather sees the learner actively creating their own meaning to their knowledge. Constructivist principles acknowledge that real-life learning is messy and complex. Classrooms which emulate the “fuzziness” of this learning will be more effective in preparing learners for life-long learning.
