While the Land family is searching for Davy, they encounter harsh winter weather. This storm changes throughout the section as the family's feeling change. At first the blizzard is another obstacle in their way. It could even be looked at as one of the 'weapons' that the world uses against the family (which relates back to the theme of war). Whenever Reuben went to visit Jape's house it was night. Of course it being at night made sense for Reuben to slip away undetected but it also contributed to the mood of this section. Reuben is afraid of Jape, and all of their encounters being at night adds to the dark and dangerous mood. The end was also a big surprise. The suprise was also reflected in the time of day.
