Dorian falls in love with the actress, the young beauty Sybil Vane, but after the failure of the performance to which he invited Lord Henry and Basil, he rudely rejects her, which is why she commits suicide. Sybil's brother, the sailor James Vane, vows revenge, and the young earl notices that after this incident the face of the portrait was distorted by an evil smile, and realizes that his wish for "aging instead of him" has come true. After this story, fears begin to appear in the life of the hero, and he cannot find peace in any way. Hoping to change everything, he decides to continue to do only good to people, but his image on the canvas does not change - the desire to “not grow old” cannot be canceled. Unable to endure these experiences anymore, in a state of despair, he cuts it with a knife, after which he himself dies. His servants discover an intact portrait of a handsome young man, and next to him is an old man with a knife in his chest.

Basil replies that this handsome man is twenty-year-old Dorian Gray, whom the painter admires, considering him his muse.

Hearing this, Lord Henry wanted to get to know this guy. To which the artist categorically says no: he fears the bad influence of his  friend on a good young man. Basil's plans are interrupted by a servant who reports that Dorian Gray is waiting below. Now dating is unavoidable.

The friends arrive at the theater and wait for Sybil to come out. And finally she appears on the stage. The girl entered the stage in the role of Juliet and Lord Henry, together with Basil, immediately noticed her beauty, but her performance was terrible and false.
Henry and Basil left without watching the show to the end. Shocked, Dorian, having waited for the end of the play, went backstage to meet with the actress. She joyfully greets him and says that she cannot play as before because of her love for him. But the lover replies that she ruined their love, calls her mediocrity. In response, Dorian hears pleas for forgiveness, but he leaves.
Arriving home, Dorian notices that his portrait has changed - cruelty has appeared on his face, which was not there before.Closing the portrait, Gray takes pity on Sybil. Dorian decided that the picture would become his conscience, he would do good deeds and not succumb to temptation.

Basil was afraid that in his work he revealed his soul, his life secret - the adoration of Dorian. But now he realized his mistake. Not having obtained permission to exhibit the portrait, the artist leaves.
Dorian, in turn, removes the painting, afraid that someone will be able to reveal his secret.

But the book intrigued him. It was a study about a hero who tried to survive the passions of bygone eras. The work took possession of the mind of the young man.
