Ody sailed to the island of King Alcinous and begins to tell him his story. He boasts about how he is known by the gods and goddesses. He tells the men seated at King Alcinous's table how he was trapped at the hands of Circe and Calypso, but he longs for his wife at home. His flashback begins as he talks about losing many of his men after leaving the war in Troy after being attacked by the Cicones. Ody also tells the tale of landing on the Lotus Eaters' island. His men ate flowers on this island that compelled them to stay, though Ody went onto the island and retrieved his men before they forgot their desire to return home.

Tiresias' prophecy was not a pleasant one. He explained what Ody had to do to get home. He was to sail through a strait with monsters on either side, have to restrain himself and his crew, and was warned not to eat cattle on the Island of Thirinica. If the cattle are eaten then everyone would die expect for Ody, who will stuck away from home for many years before returning on ship that isn't his. Once he his home, he will encounter his home in ruins and covered in suitors which he will have to kill. After the suitors are killed Ody will have to walk inland with his oar and apologize to Poseidon and sacrifice animals as an offering. After all this, he will die a peaceful death. He spoke to his mother later and she told him how his family was mourning and she had died of a broken heart. Ody left the island traumatized after talking to more ghosts called shades.
(Picture of Tiresias, the blind prophet)

Ody returns to Circe after his trip and tells her the prophecy he was given. She gives him advice on what to do when encountering the monsters and for what he thinks is going to be his final journey home. She tells him about two monsters: Scylla and Charybdis. Scylla is a lesser monster but a frightful one nonetheless with six heads that will pluck men of Ody's boat but Charybdis is a sea monster in the form of a whirlpool that would for sure sink Ody's ship. Because of this, Ody comes the decision of sacrificing 6 men to Scylla in order for everyone else to sail around Charybdis. Finally, Circe warns Ody about not eating the cattle of the Island of Helios or else great misfortune would fall upon Ody and his crew.
(picture of Scylla and Charydbis)

The first monsters Ody passes on his sail home are sirens. The crew's ears are stuffed with beeswax and they are unable to hear their chants. Ody is tied to the ship and is only untied once they are far from the sirens. Ody does not warn his crew of Scylla because he wants them to not lose hope. As they approach a narrow strait with the monster on both sides, Scylla snatches 6 men. Ody describes this as the most horrific things he sees on his journey, his men dangling and wailing his name before death. Though the rest of the crew rows away quickly and Charybdis is avoided. Ody tells his men no but he loses his battle as the crew begs to land on the next island they see: Helio's Island. The men disobey Ody and eat the cattle of the sun god. As a punishment, Zeus sends a lightning bolt down on Ody's men with and destroy his ship. Ody is the only one left, and his prophecy has come true.
(Picture of the sirens attacking Ody's ship)
