Hiroshima a Novella by Lawrence Yep

Kureha-
This book is about a girl named Sachi living in Hiroshima where it is aimed from the Americans to drop an atom bomb from WW2 so the Japanese will give up. Sachi is a really sweet but shy girl and one day a atom bomb was dropped by the americans. When it was first dropped she was walking with her elder sister to help whats happened around their town. after the bomb was dropped Sachi was found under the ruins and severe burns and headaches. when she was older she wasn't able to move her hand but, one day the Americans and the Japanese made a deal to have some Japanese maidens go off to America and get treated and also have a better education. After when she came back back to her home she was fully able to move her hand and could speak english quite fluently. The end was sad and happy at the same time.

Javon-
This was a really good book and the same time a really sad book as Sachi was in a middle of world war 2 and the father was in the army. Then in the end the father and the sister died so she had to survive with her mother. The Americans also made a new bomb and that was called the Atom bomb and that could wipe out the whole of Singapore

Ameya-
This was a good book about what happened when the Americans attacked Hiroshima and the effect on the lives of the people. This book is about a little girl that was injured in Hiroshima and lost her family members in the Hiroshima attack.

Samaira-
This was an awesome book about the Americans bombing Japan. This book was about the experiences of what Sachi went through and how she faced problems when her dad and sister died but she didn't give up. She was one of the first 25 maidens who went to America and got her surgeries done. She was also called monkey face. She never gave up after everything that happened to her. It was mainly about her during the bomb and how she tried to save herself.

Sadako and the thousand paper cranes

Oliver -
Sadako is a very active and excitable girl, who loves to run, jump and race around the school. But her heart is suddenly flooded with fear when she was running a race one day. A strange dizziness, that she has kept a secret for months, finally drains every last drop of her energy and strength. She is taken to a hospital which frightened her very much, because it's a hospital with an entire area for leukaemia, aka atom bomb disease. Hiroshima had been struck by the atom bomb 9 years earlier, and it had spread radiation all around the city. People still got it years after, because when radiation goes somewhere, it stays there, even for many years. So it's no surprise when Sadako is diagnosed with it, even though the atom bomb hadn't even put a scratch on her! The mystery remains, but that didn't matter. she thought she was doomed to remain in the hospital until she died, until her friend came over one day and showed her how to make a paper crane, something that you can wish on if you make 1,000. Will the magic of the paper cranes be enough for her to be well again?
Oliver's review: =) =) =) =)

Alhan -
My takeaway from this book was that it was quite sad and that the book was based on a real story and the characters were also real. My message was to this book is that I appreciate this author of writing this book because it tells a story that people want to know about and it is a memorial to the people who passed away in the actual atom bomb

Jamie -
Sadako is a really active and fit girl, but then one day she got the atom bomb disease. So the problem of the book is that she wants to go home and train to be a athlete but she has the atom bomb disease and in the end it is sad. And the setting is in WW2 in Japan. The moral of this book is that it went back and told about the people who passed away and remember them, and it was a really sad ending. But to stop the disease she has to make a thousand cranes to stop it, but she didn't make a thousand in time. I think that the book was a bit thin and it needed to give a bit more info and tell what happened before and how the radiation and atom bomb disease happens. Read the book to find out more. This story took place in about the 1900s.

Xixi -
I liked the book, but it was a bit thin and I wanted to know what happened after and before the story. It made me want to read more about life.

Maggie, Jess and Tanay - Number the Stars by: Lois Lowry

Maggie
I think this book is really good and sad at the same time because it is based in world war two and the Nazis. It was about a girl called Annemarie and her family trying to save her best friends family, who is a Jew. It is a really interesting book and it was really hard to stop reading because at the end of every chapter was a really bad cliff hanger! At the end of where we were supposed to end was so intense I really wanted to keep on reading! Anniemarie's mom was helping the Rosens (her best friend's family) safely out of Denmark without the Nazis catching them. At the end of the chapter Anniemarie wakes up and finds her mom missing, but finds a dark figure on the floor outside and finds out its her mom! It was such a cliff hanger! :(

Tanay
For the first book in our Historical Fiction unit, my group is reading Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. The book is based on life in Denmark under Hitler's Nazis rule. The story involves a girl called Annemarie and her sister Kiristi. They had a sister called Lise who died in a car accident. They have a great friend called Ellen, who is Jewish. The story is about how they manage to bring her and her family to Sweden safely.

Jess
The book is extremely well written and has a good plot (most of which was inspired by her friend's story of that time) it's sad to see such cruelty man has shown to man just because of one's religion but it inspires bravery to see the things people have done to help the persecuted, even though it might end in death for them.

Kiss the dust by: Elizabeth Laird

Jimmy-
I think that this is quite a good book but it didn't really hook me on it. It is a book about this girl named Tara. This book is set in Iraq while the war between Iran and Iraq. I can tell that this is set not that long ago because there were still modern cars like jeeps. Basically when the war broke out, all the people in Iraq that where Kurdish were being hunted down by the Iraqi government. There is a group called the Pesh Murgas that are rebels that fight against the Iraqi Government. I feel really bad because Tara's family was one of very few families to survive that war. In the end they decided to move to England to have a new life. And in the end Tara made some new friends.

Sama-
I think that kiss the dust was a sad book because in the first and second page the boy got killed. That was really sad. I know that the Iraq people were trying to hunt down the Kurdish people and when the boy was about to die he said "I would die for Kurdistan" and that made me feel really sad because the Kurdish people are fighting against there own country. But I did not enjoy that book I was kind of bored reading it because it wasn't interesting. I know that it was not really a long time because there were modern cars and jeeps.

Sophia-
This book is really good, it is like three books in one. It has many different themes, action, sadness, family and identity. The author told the story very well from Tara's perspective because you almost felt like you were there with her as they described it so well. I can tell that this book was set not long ago because they did ride in a shuttle bus but there was probably not that developed technology. I have learnt a lot about war torn countries and how Tara and her family had to flee from their homeland to another country, and became refugees. In my opinion it is really unfair because Tara and her little sister Hero had to flee almost every second day to a different place. I really liked how it ended because Tara started at a new school in England and she met some new friends.

Sasha-
I think that Kiss the Dust is a really good book because is spreads awareness about the lives of people living in Iraq. I have learnt that the characters in this story are living in war. They are a type of religion that is being hunted down by the Iraqi people. It says in the book “i would die for Kurdistan” therefore I know that there is a resistance that is fighting back. I know that it not - that long ago because there are Jeeps, and other modern cars. I know that the story is set in a religious town because there is a priest in the temple. I also know that the war is escalating upwards since in the book it says “go to school, while you still can.” so I think that people are losing hope that the war might finally be over and the Iraqi people will lose. i know that now Tara and her family are really in danger and don’t feel safe anywhere. I would feel so scared if i knew that at any moment in time a bomb could fall from the sky, and explode. It’s sad to think that that’s a life of some Kurds in Iraq. For some people in Iraq They live in refugee camps for around 3 years. And Tara's family was actually one of the lucky ones since they in the end made it to England.

I didn't really have any connections but I can say that I draw. I think the author wrote this book because maybe people were saying rumours about something and this guy wrote what he wanted to write.

Jamie -
The book was okay but it really didn't make sense it it was hard to tell who the main character was. It was a good adventure and had good historical fiction book.

Oliver -
The second Mrs. Gioconda was a little confusing at times and at times I didn't know WHAT was going on or WHO was the main character. but besides that, I enjoyed reading about the fictional adventures of Leonardo Da Vinci.

Xixi -
The Second Mrs Gioconda was good, but it was a bit confusing. Its about a boy called Salai is a thief, but after he gets caught by Leonardo Da Vinci, he gives up stealing stuff from people and becomes Leonardo's apprentice. The end was really confusing so I didn't really understand it.

Uday-
This book is about a boy called Barry and the Titanic. The ship sets off to meet his parents because he hasn't met them in a long time, due to work. In the middle of the voyage the Titanic meets an encounter and it hits an iceberg and starts to sink, even though it is "unsinkable". Barry also liked a girl called Pegeen and wanted to save her, but was locked in a cell. Barry had the opportunity to just leave but he wanted to save Pegeen. I recommend this book because it is a good book and gets really exciting.

Reiko-
I think that SOS titanic is a bit boring at the start but as the Titanic get closer to the ice-burg there is more action and it was more of a cliff hanger because we want to know if he and Pegeen lives. the reason he goes on this trip is because he is going to meet his family in America because he goes once a year.

It is about a boy that was captured by the 🤬's at a very young age as a result of loosing his parents and his will to actually survive but one day someone lets him escape the camp and the journey begins all the from Bulgaria to Denmark without actually knowing nothing where he he is going although with a plot. I think the book is so amazing and really made me think a lot of the existence of the life around me and how lucky I really am.

Javon-
This book is about a boy named David and he just escaped this terrible camp because there was a compass and that was to find his mother. This is also a very depressing/SAD book but in the end it is a good book. It is really sad because the dog dies. Then he found this Italian person that told him he had to go to Denmark so then he went there and then he went to Italy and he found a family there. But sooner than later the mom wanted to kick him out to go to an orphanage and then he ran away. In this book Parvana goes through a lot from loosing family members and getting separated from her family but on the way of her journey she finds hope and sacrifice and its very inspirational and heartbreaking but a really wonderful book.

Javon-
This book is about a girl and se lost her father to a war and then her mother brother and sister separated from her and now she is on a journey to find them but she meets people on the way and she goes with them to go and find her family the people she met was Hassan, Asif and Leila but then while Leila saw food on the other side of landmine she still went to get it and then she exploded and died because all of the blood went of of her but then while that happened they saw the mother because they were in the same street and then they went back to a family.

Ameya-
Parvana is trying to find her family and in the middle when she was going to rest then she saw a person called Asif. Asif stayed in a cave. She stayed there for five days and then went to find her family.

Samaira-
This was a wonderful book about Parvana and her long journey to reunite with her family. I like how she decided to continue with her journey even when she had a lot of pain going through losing her family and being able to witness her father’s death. She meets a baby named (by Parvana) Hassan and a boy named Asif. Together they travel together and find her mother. Along the way she writes in her book to her best friend Shauzia. Together they manage to find her mother and they help run a school. Also she has to bear losing her father's precious books. Will she find them in the next book?

Sama-
This book is about a boy named Archie and his brother Des leaves to fight in the war. Archie has to take care of his mother, his dad died because he was fighting in the war. Archie and his mom moves to his moms sisters house to live because the war is coming so Archie goes to a school but he has this problem where he stutters while he talks but not when he writes. The boys at school bully him and make him say things again and again because they want to hear him stutter and I can tell he is not having a great time at his school. I feel sad for Archie because he has not even met his dad and things are not going well for him and also because he has a problem and he is not able to speak good. I did not really like this book because it was quite boring and I was not really interested, even when I looked at the book.

Sasha-
I learned that this book took place during World War 2, and that the setting was in a small town in Australia. I think that Archie is fighting two battles right now, he’s fighting the town bully Beefy, and in his mind he’s fighting the World war. Archie’s brother Des Is with the Militia, Des is with Harold on the Kokoda track, but the Japanese aren't far behind. One night at dinner Archie’s mum invites someone over and assumptions spark, but after she said that her family is already complete, and she isn’t trying to replace Archies father ( who is dead ). Archie also has a job setting up a game that is similar to pool. He and Cousin, Stanley are sharing a room, and Archie even stood up for himself when a boy called Tony made fun of him. Archie put him in a arm hold until he said he wouldn’t bully Archie anymore. So i’m happy that Archie might finally not- let the bully’s get to him and to stick up for himself. I’m noticing that in the story they’re saying things like Mate, e.t.c. That shows me that this story is set in Australia. I can tell that this was some time ago because, it said that it is in WW2, which i know is a long time ago. I think that Archie was closer to Des, than Harold, because he talked about Des more, and i think he was more excited when he got a letter from Des.

Jimmy-
This book is really good and is one of the best historical fiction book that I have ever read. This book is set in Australia. This book is laid out in a diary form. This book is called Kokoda because it was a place in Papua New Guinea were all the Australian army was. I know that this book is set in the past because the story is set in World War 2. I also know that this is set in the past because all of them talk in a very old way. The main character's brothers were both serving for the Australian army. Every week Archie's brothers would send letters.

Sophia-
I really enjoy reading this book because it has a lot of action and the right amount of sadness. I think this book took place in World War 2 because they have talked about the war before. In my opinion Archie was closer to Des than Harold because they used to share a room and they did everything together.

Number the stars
Alhan -
It’s 1953, and it’s for Annie
( Annemarie Johansen ). life in Copenhagen is a complicated mix of an ordinary home and school time, food shortages and constant presence of the 🤬 soldiers. The 🤬’s keep attacking their village or whatever you call it. I think it would be hard to live there and buy food and things there because there are 🤬's everywhere. Her best friend Ellen are Jewish and the Nazis command that all of the Jewish must be located someplace else. I have a really big prediction that Anne will be murdered or kidnapped after the 🤬's check her out.
Jamie -
This book was based in 1943 it was in war. When Anne and her friends were racing because of a competition at school a 🤬 came out of no where and asked why were they running, the 🤬 said they looked weird. I think that it would be really hard to be free there because the 🤬's will always ask you to stop or something. If I was living there I would be so nervous and I would feel like I can't be free. I think that they will escape or maybe they will get kidnapped because the 🤬's saw their faces. I think they will escape the country. The book was really good. didn't know that the fisherman had hiding spots. So when the Rosens escaped the fisherman had a hanker chief and the hanker chief had a drug to make the dogs not smell humans. So the Rosens escaped to Sweden and were ok. The adventure was super good and some parts were pretty dramatic and the Nazis were really bad.

Xixi -
Number the Stars is about a girl called Annemarie Johansen, and she lives in 1953, in the middle of World War 2. Her best friend, Ellen, is a Jew, and the Nazis declare that all Jews must be 'relocated'. Ellen and her family.
