The micro-teaching activity ‘Be like an animal and finish the course’ is an activity that focuses on the student’s ability to re-enact different animals while going through the obstacle course. For each stage the student will have to pick out of the hat where it will have an animal and an instruction, for example hop like a frog. Once the first students finished the course, the next student goes.

The goal of this activity is to encourage the students to be able to explore and experience with the natural world. As each student have their own interpretations, it’s important to nurture on a student’s identity and how they view things in their own way. Associating with The Early Years Learning Framework, Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved learners. Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and reflectivity. As well as trying to be able to re-enact the animals that are included, linking to the Aboriginal and Indigenous animals.

This activity can help foster the students to have their own imagination and to have fun while going through the course, as well as building on their physical strengths, skills and knowledge when it comes to thinking about being the animal and the movement involved when going through the course. Connecting to the ‘Common Worlds Research Collective’ where one blog ‘With(in) the Forest focuses on the unexpected moments that happen within the forest and through this activity I want the students to be inspired to think beyond themselves and to consider questions when engaging through the obstacles and having fun. Where they’re able to feel comfortable with the place and it can encourage the students to communicate and have teamwork. Connecting to The Early Years Learning Framework, Outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing. Children become strong in their social and emotional wellbeing and take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing.

Throughout the activity, I could notice the students being very involved in re-enacting the animal and having fun while going through the obstacle course. The students experience a range of animals where they can incorporate it into their own way, whether it be flapping their wings, hopping, jumping and more. What surprised me about the learners were they each had their own concept when it comes to re-enacting the animal and how they would pass through the course, which makes it exciting where students become competitive.

For my future learning experiences, I aim to set a practice where students learn as they go, that way they’re not just re-enacting the animals and going through the course by instruction, but an activity where they can make their own rules, for example, I give them an animal and they have to act out that animal. That way not only am I teaching the students on what to do, but they’re also learning and teaching me on how about they go with the different animals and the physical knowledge they have going through the course.
