Dharmachakra, also known as wheel of dharma, is one of the great symbols for Buddhism. The different parts of this wheel of teaching help to summarize Buddhism as a whole. Consisting of the rim, the eight spokes, and the hub of the wheel. The rim of said wheel represents the endless cycle of rebirth. The separate eight spokes stand for the entirety of the eightfold path in which is taught by the Buddha. The hub symbolizes one’s moral self discipline. So each part coming together to make the whole, that is Buddhism.

Right Understanding is the first and most important step of the Noble Eightfold Path. For it is, “the understanding of the causes of suffering, the end of suffering, and the way one endures suffering. In short, this step is summation of the Four Noble Truths”(Exploring the Religions, 255). For one to achieve this step they must gather the true understanding of the causes of suffering, the end of suffering, and the one one endure it. This step in summary, requires one to see things for what they truly are.

One can go about practicing the principle of Right Understanding in their daily lives in many ways. The main way, in my mind, is through having openness with others. For without this openness one may never gather the true understanding of anything or even anyone.

Right Thought is the second step of the Noble Eightfold Path. For it is, “not just getting rid of wrong thoughts. It is replacing wrong thoughts, like hatred and desire, with right thoughts, like loving kindness and renunciation. Right thought can be equated with the Christian beatitude of single-heartedness”(Exploring the Religions, 255). For one to achieve this step they must work on their spreading of love, kindness, and renunciation to their community. This step in summary, states that the mind must be purified of all that moves it away from enlightenment.

One can go about practicing the principle of Right Thought in their daily lives in many ways. The main way, in my mind, is through loving yourself first. For without love of one’s self how might they even begin to share said true love with others.

Right Speech is the third step of the Noble Eightfold Path. For it is where, “All forms of lying, slandering, gossiping, and using harsh words must be eliminated. Instead, a person must speak truthfully and kindly about others”(Exploring the Religions, 255). For one to achieve this step they must work on truthfulness and love. This step in summary, is the renouncing of any form of lying, slandering, gossiping, or sharing of harsh comments on others.

One can go about practicing the principle of Right Speech in their daily lives in many ways.
