Year 6 have had another excellent week. I have been really impressed with the continued hard work and focus that they have shown this week. The class have continued their work on the Mayans, using and developing their map skills to locate the countries and cities that the ancient civilization inhabited. The children have also immersed themselves in our model text, the Mayan myth 'How Tortoise got his Shell'. After reading and discussing the myth, the children acted out the key events using freezeframes as part of a drama lesson. We also began our science topic, 'Electricity', this week, recapping the knowledge learned in Year 4 and investigating circuits with different components.

Next week, Year 6 will be walking to Kenilworth Castle on Tuesday (21st Sept) and will need to come to school in PE kit on Wednesday (22nd) for 'World Fitness Day'. Please see the 'Information' column for further details.

It has been another excellent week in Year 6 and the children are really rising to the responsibility of being the oldest class in the school. Last week, Year 6 each met their Reception Class 'Buddy', who they will get to know throughout the year and be a positive role model for. I have been thrilled to see how caring and supportive Year 6 have been towards the new Reception Class. They have made them feel welcome, helped them with the lunchtime routines and shown a lot of maturity in how they have introduced them to Priors Field.

One of the highlights of the week has been National Fitness Day. On Wednesday, the children carried out a scientific investigation into how exercise impacts their pules rate. In groups, the class designed their own investigation before carrying out, performing the exercises and then measuring and recording the changes to their pulses.

Please accept my apologies that we had to cancel our walk to Kenilworth Castle this week. We are hoping to go next week instead (Tuesday 28th September). Please find the relevant information in the 'Information' column. --->

Well done on another strong week Year 6.

Year 6 have worked hard this week. We began the week by discussing the important issue of bullying. We then used this year's them 'One Kind Word' to write some powerful poems which were shared in assembly on Friday. In maths, the children have continued their work on fractions, ordering, comparing, adding and subtracting fractions. The class have also really enjoyed learning more about tectonic plates, what happens at their boundaries and also where the main mountain ranges throughout the world are located.
The highlight of the week was making chocolate! The children worked in pairs to decide on the recipes for their chocolate, which they then took home in their very own chocolate boxes. I hope the chocolates were shared and enjoyed!

It has been another busy and varied week in Year 6. This week, the class started an exciting design and technology project ('Come Dine With Me') that will run into next term. They will be working in groups to design a 3 course meal menu. Once their menus are finalised, the children will make one of their courses and each taste and evaluate a different dish from a different group.

It has also been an active week with the Wellbeing Ambassadors representing the school as well as 8 Year 6 children attending a rowing competition.

We have continued with our learning about volcanoes and earthquakes, with the children making their very own seismographs and testing them out in the classroom!

Next week is presentation week. I am thoroughly looking forward to watching the children present on the wide range of interesting topics that they have chosen. Please can everyone ensure that they will be able to access everything that they need for their presentation from Monday next week (29/11/2021).

We have been treated to some excellent presentations on a wide variety of topics including elements, lizards, athletics and COP26 to just name a few. It has been great to see the children stand up and present to their class with such confidence, an important life skill to develop. Christmas festivities have also begun in Year 6 this week, with Mrs Lloyd kindly coming in to make Christmas cakes with the children. These will be decorated next week and then brought home to be enjoyed. We rounded off the week with Christmas Decoration Morning. The children made mince pies and some different hanging decorations that will be brought home to add to the festive cheer!

Year 6 will play a key role in the KS2 Carol Service next week and have been rehearsing their parts all week.

It has been another fun and festive week in Year 6. The highlight, without doubt, was the Christmas carol performance at St Nicholas' Church on Wednesday evening. The class rose to the challenge, impressing everyone with their singing and narration. We have also been treated to two fabulous performances this week. On Tuesday and Thursday the children got the chance to watch the KS1 and Reception dress rehearsals.
We are coming to the end of our topic, 'What a Disaster', but still have plenty of work to do next week. The class will be writing an explanation text on how to stay safe during an earthquake, something they have been learning about this week. We will also be beginning a new unit of maths, focusing on geometry and the properties of shape.
Despite this, there will still be plenty to enjoy next week, including the Year 5/6 Christmas party on Wednesday afternoon. Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Year 6 have had an excellent first term. The whole class should be proud of the way they have responded to the demands of Year 6 and settled in to the school year. Each and every member of the class have risen to the responsibility of being the older members of the school, setting an example to the other classes. A great example of this is the way that Year 6 have supported their Reception Buddies to settle in to life at Priors Field. It has been heartwarming to see how the children have formed supportive and caring relationships.

In the classroom, we have successfully completed our topics 'Mysterious Mayans' and 'What a Disaster', learning about the ancient Mayan civilisation, how volcanoes are formed and how to stay safe during an earthquake. We have also been busy with lots of other exciting activities. Some of the highlights include:

- Walking to Kenilworth Castle
- Visiting Cadbury World
- Creating a menu for our 'Come Dine With Me' competition
- An excellent presentation week
- Designing and making Mayan masks
- Designing and making chocolate boxes (and of course filling them with chocolate)
- Christmas decoration morning
- Making Christmas cakes!

Next term, we will begin with my favourite topic, 'Shine a Light', in which we will be learning about refugees and immigration. This will be linked to some excellent texts including 'The Boy at the Back of the Class' and 'The Island'.

I hope everyone has a wonderful and restful Christmas break. I look forward to welcoming everyone back in January ready for a full and fun Spring Term.

Welcome back and happy new year! I hope everyone enjoyed a lovely Christmas break.

I would like to begin by saying a huge thank you for your generous Christmas gifts. Mrs F and I both felt humbled and very appreciative. Thank you.

The class have settled back in excellently this week. We are joined by Mrs Hallam this term, who will be doing some teaching in Year 6 along with myself and Mrs F. Furthermore, Year 6 will be taught their new science topic, 'Light', by Mrs FS on Wednesday afternoons this term, something that they got started on this week.

Our topic this term is 'Shine a Light'. The children will be learning about refugees and migration throughout the world. This is obviously a very emotive and serious topic. We use some excellent texts to support the teaching of this as well as produce some powerful art work using photography.

Before getting stuck into our new topic, Year 6 have spent some time learning more about Growth Mindset. This included watching some thought provoking videos and then working in a group to create a poster/presentation for the Reception Buddies. If you're interested, follow the links below to learn more about this.

We have lots to do this term and I can't wait to continue with it all next week.

Year 6 have had a busy week. On Wednesday, the class went to the environmental area to compose and take some photos inspired by the famous 'Migrant Mother' image taken by photographer Dorothea Lange. The class then edited their images by cropping them and changing the light exposure. You can see these photos in the Year 6 area of the school website.

The class also spent the week using the famous image to inspire their writing and use of figurative language. This resulted in them creating poems titled 'Through the eyes of the migrant mother'.

In maths, the class have nearly finished their work on decimals and will be moving on to percentages next week. The maths sessions on Friday mornings are proving effective and helping to boost confidence in maths.

In science, the children continued their work on 'Light' by investigating how shadows are formed and how they change depending on the position of the light source.

Another good week Year 6 - keep up the good work!

I have thoroughly enjoyed hearing all the wonderful things that the school staff have said about the class whilst I was off and I really appreciate your hard work and continued excellent attitudes.

This week has been online safety week with the class learning about how to be safe online and recapping their knowledge of this. The Digital Defender kicked off the week brilliantly by delivering an assembly to both KS1 and KS2 about online safety and the activities planned for the week Throughout the week, the class had many discussions about how to stay safe online as well as discussing what would make the internet a better, safer place in an ideal world.

Year 6 have had an excellent first week back. I was glad to hear that the class had enjoyed a rest over the half-term break. We have had a varied week! On Tuesday we visited the environmental area to explore the different 'living things' there for our science topic 'Living things and their habitats'. On Wednesday morning, we completed our DT project 'Come Dine With Me' in which the class made a three course meal including stuffed peppers, salmon and pancakes! And of course, World Book Day on Friday! It was fabulous to see the children embrace the day with their costumes as well as taking some time to read with their Reception Buddies!

What a great week. Year 6 deserve a lot of credit for the positive attitudes and learning behaviours that they have demonstrated this week. In assembly on Monday, Mrs Gane talked about being an 'Active Learner'. In Year 6, we discussed this further and outlined some positive learning behaviours that the children could aim to display throughout the week. They have done this in abundance and should be very proud.

On Tuesday, we were joined by 3 Warwickshire Magistrates who spoke to the children about the role of a the Magistrates Court as well as running a Mock Trial! The class engaged brilliantly as court reporters, artists, prosecutors and witnesses (amongst other roles), impressing the visitors with their attitudes and questions.

We have also continued our new science topic this week, 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. This involved making (and playing) a game of animal Guess Who!

We have also begun our new topic for the half-term, 'The Whole World's A Stage', in which we will study Shakespeare's Macbeth. The topic got off to a great start with a 'Whoosh' - a quickfire performance of the play involving all class members taking on different roles.

Finally, we finished the week with an active Sports For All morning on Friday.

A fantastic week Year 6 - well done!

It has been another busy week in Year 6.

On Monday, the class took part in a Sportshall Athletics competition at Ryton Connexions Centre. The whole class competed in at least two events including standing long-jump, javlin and a variety of running races including a Paarlauf (a continuous relay!). We were thrilled with the way that the class participated, being competitive, supportive and enjoying the challenge of competing against other skills. We finished 5th out of 14 schools. Well done Year 6!

Tuesday was STEM day. The theme this year was 'Grow' and Year 6 completed a range of different investigations based on the theme, which also linked closely to our current topic 'Living Things and Their Habitats'. The children spent time looking at mould and pond water underneath a microscope, investigating with yeast and research about penicillin.

We have also continued with our Shakespeare topic, 'The Whole World's a Stage', this week. This has included exploring Shakespeare's use of iambic pentameter when writing in verse. To do this, the children recited passages of Shakespeare written in iambic pentameter, performing them as rap music.

As you may already be aware, I will be going on paternity leave next week (planned to begin Wednesday 23rd March). I have spoken to the class about this and explained that I will be off for 2 weeks. The children responded to the news in a heartwarming way and have even enjoyed guessing the name! Mrs F and Mrs Hallam will be covering most of the teaching during the 2 weeks, with help from Mrs FS who is teaching science this half-term. I will be back in school before the Easter break and I am looking forward to the Summer Term with Year 6.

It requires showing 20 pictures, each for 20 seconds.

We will do a shortened version of this (10 pictures, 10 seconds each).

You should learn you script off by heart and have a minimal amount of text on your slides.

Good luck!

I can't believe the final half-term of the school year is here. Year 6 have had an excellent week. We have made a strong start to our topic, 'We'll Meet Again', by learning about the beginning of WWII and evacuees. We also began our maths project for the half-term, 'Priors Field Tours' whereby the children are researching and planning trip abroad!

The highlight of the week has been the end of year play auditions. Everyone performed brilliantly and has approached the play with great enthusiasm. Everyone received their parts today. I know some people will be disappointed not to get the part they wanted, but I am sure everyone will pull together to create a fabulous class performance.

Please see the information about our trip on Monday and presentation week w/c 27/6.

It has been a busy week in Year 6! We began the week with a great visit to Edgbaston Priory Club to watch the Rothesay Classic Tennis. This was a fantastic outing which included watching some great tennis, a tennis clinic and even meeting a current Wimbledon Champion. Another highlight of the week was Tuesday's music day. Mrs Lloyd arranged a fantastic range of activities and performances across the whole school. The children listened carefully to some of Oasis' best music from the 90s and also made their own versions of Gustav Holst's Mercury. Year 6 have been hugely responsible today. They have read with Reception, taught Year 1 how to use MyMaths and also supported Mrs FS with the Reception Father's day event. Keep up the great work next week.

The end of the school year is approaching quickly and Year 6 are handling the busy timetable very well. This week, Year 6 completed their SRE (Sex and Relationships Education) lessons. The class approached the lessons sensibly and engaged by asking questions. Well done Year 6!

On Wednesday, most of the class visited their secondary school (Kenilworth School for the majority of the class). It was great to hear the children speak so positively about the experience. I hope the visit has helped the children feel confident about moving on to secondary school next year. I have every confidence that they make a smooth and strong start in September.

On Thursday the class took part in their final Sports Day. It was a great event that was enjoyed by all. The highlight was of course the infamous 'Sticky Race'!

The whole Year 6 class should be immensely proud of the way they have worked hard, progressed and developed this year. It has been a pleasure (and a lot of fun) to work with this group of children. Here are some of the highlights:

- Our walk to Kenilworth Castle in Autumn Term

- Our trip to Cadbury World

- The whole class debate as part of our topic ‘Shine a Light’

- The visit from the Magistrates

- The residential trip to Manor Adventure in Wales

- Athletics at Edmonscote

- Meeting and supporting Reception Buddies

- A day out at the tennis!

- Sports Day (including the Sticky Race!)

- The wonderful creativity shown in the Shakespeare projects

- The Petcha Kucha presentations

- Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies!

Just as we thought we had escaped COVID, it caught up with us after Christmas, creating a few challenging weeks in school. Once again, the children adapted and responded well, continuing to learn and work at home. I would also like to add that for a group of children whose education has been disrupted so much by the pandemic, they have come through Year 6 with

I am confident that each and every member of our class is well-prepared for the next phase of their education. I wish you all the very best and look forward to hearing of your future successes!
