Children in India are facing higher drop-out rates due to poor reading and writing skills. The drop-out rate is highest among young girls and children under 12 who are living in rural areas. This is because typically children in rural areas are given more chores during the day, leaving little time for them to finish schoolwork.

A study performed on school-aged children in the rural areas of Rwanda shows the difference between school-only learning and lifewide-learning approaches to see what we can do to improve their education. Both treatments were shown to increase oral comprehension, reading fluency, and reading comprehension, but many students lacked basic skills. This shows us that more advancements need to be made to help these children gain a better education.
