George takes care of Lennie because he's a bit mentally challenged so he's a lot of work. Their relationship is a bit forced because when his aunt Clara died, George didn't really have a choice to take him in because  of how Lennie is mentally challenged.

For example, Crooks is the only black person in the book and he gets treated bad from curlys wife and also his coworker.
