Fictional Embodiment of Self-Reliance

Although fictional, Dean Winchester is a brilliant example of true self-reliance. He has been taking care of himself and his little brother, Sam since he was five years old. Their dad would often leave them alone in motel rooms for weeks at a time with little money and hardly any food, but he always ensured that his brother was fed and clothed. He worked jobs from a very young age, sacrificing his education, and he did it all by himself. Even into adulthood, he continues to live this way, often tending to his own wounds, fixing his own car, and very rarely asking for or needing help.
He's Brave - "Bravery let him speak the utmost syllable of his confession"
He does his job well and with little aid - "A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best"
He does not live a normal life and lives pretty closed off from the rest of society- "Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist."

"Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone" and "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself" - These quotes both bring up the notion that the relationship you hold with yourself is the most important in your life.

"You know in the end the day you left was just my beginning" and "Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of every one of its members" - These quotes establish the idea that the toxicity of society is actually poor for the human mind, and that true happiness can begin once you are free from its clutches.

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, stronger
Just me, myself and I" and "The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried" - Both these quotes expand on the idea that the human body and mind are destined for so much, but we cannot see what all we accomplish until we just let go ahead and try and pray we make it through.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger

Chris McCandless embodies the principle of self-reliance because he believed in the idea of stepping away from society and living at one with nature and yourself. He traveled on his own never staying someplace or depending on someone for too long, and he frequently shot down offers of help that extended past what he thought was necessary.
