Friar Edwin Leahy

"The next morning, Friar Leahy assembled the entire in the gymnasium and lit into students and faculty alike for two hours. He gave sermons every Sunday in the church that adjoined the school, and the one he gave that day was full of fire and brimstone... The friar's voice, hoarse to begin with, faded to an angry, condemning rasp."

The friar was speaking out against a riot between St. Benedict students and students from another high school and this excerpt really shows his passion for order. The friar seems to mean well in most everything he does. He doesn't seem like a spiteful character but a very passionate and disciplined person.

"When Curtis' father spoke of college, Tavarus had never allowed himself to feel included... But in some long-dormant part of his consciousness now stirred by his friend Rob, he saw it: a campus far from here with grassy quads and matching eaved buildings, with Tavarus himself walkin through it carrying an armload of books"

Tavarus Hester is a troubled student but certainly holds aspirations for himself. While he struggles with class through determination and help from Rob he strives for a better future.

Drew Jemison

"Drew Jemison grew up in Montclair, a middle-class suburb northeast of the Oranges. His father had left when he was four, but his mother's boyfriend, Snow, had been a steadfast presence since then, not a father exactly, but the next best thing. Drew was massive with a booming voice that belied his relatively soft sensibilities. He wasn't a brawler because he didn't have to be; just by standing he projected an assurance of never being confronted about anything."

Drew by far seems to be definitely one of the most stable of the group. He's a pretty level headed guy and we get the feeling that everything is gonna end alright for this kid if he keeps his head in the right place.

Julius "Flowy" Starkes

A tall and almost cartoonishly thin, with a long face that gave him an ever-present hangdog expression... People called him Flowy for his ability to exist casually in agrid of blocks where men and boys killed simply for walking down a street they didn't live on. He was all good with everyone; he just flowed."

Julius was an easy going guy. Just as well bonded with everyone else in the Burger Boyz. Born to negligent parents he managed to find away to keep himself afloat and fend for himself and learned to do it well.

"Curtis Gamble was an amiable leader in the school immediately. He was curious, easygoing, hilarious: the boy who knew how to best spend each hour."

In the group Curtis Gamble definitely seems to be the one boy who is most secure overall and just shines as a leader. His parents are very kind and charitable with their time and resources and always welcome the boys. Curtis is arguably the leader of the Burger Boyz and if not completely the leader then he and Rob in synergy for leadership.

" In Rob he found a man who harbored many of the same feelings but was able to do so seamlessly (at least outwardly so), with a smile and some profane but harmless shit talk over a blunt."

Oswaldo was another person who could relate to Rob. They both smoked and shared the burden of having to take care of their families as well as themselves. Oswaldo was polite to Hobbs but they were never all that chummy. He at one point loses his sense of sanity after all the stress builds up and is put into a psychiatric ward.
