  •  In hot deserts ,the seasons  are warm during the year and very hot in the summer. In cold deserts are long cold​ winters and short warmer summers.
  • By the day, it's very hot reaching more than 50°C due to the shortwave solar radiation. At night, it's very cold since it decreases to 0°C due to the loss of shortwave solar radiation.

  • In order for plants to survive in the desert, they have adaptations that allow them to collect and store water and moisture and prevent moisture loss.
  • The plants store water in their roots, stem, leaves or fruit.
  •  Plants called succulents store water in their stem or leaves.
  •  Some plants will shrink in size during dry times which allow them to use the stored moisture.
  • Some plants have a short life cycle, they grow, flower, germinate and die within a year.

  • Members of the Poppy Family are characterized by flowers wiith numerous stamens and 4 to 6 petals.
  •  This very branchy, pale green plant grows to 4 feet high and is covered with yellow pricklies. Long, very lobed, spiny leaves resembling thristles grow to 8 inches.
  • All parts of this plant contain alkaloids that are poisonous. It's common throughout the west because not even cattle it..

  •  In years when rainfall is sparse, this blue-flowered lupine can still be found in abundance along desert roadsides.
  • The leaves of Arizona Lupine are bright green and its flowers are somewhat shorter with a more purple pinkish color.
  •  Lupine, often called Coulter's Lupine, is a favourite among bees. It relies on up 10 species, including bumblebees and honey bees, to polinate its flowers.

    In some deserts, rain doesn't fall for years. 
    • Cold deserts get more rainfall (wich is in form of sonowor fog) than hot deserts. The temperatures of cold deserts are usually between 0ºC and 4ºC.
    • Hot deserts dsaytime temperatures can be over 38ºC in the daytime and below - 4ºC in the evening.
