In Playboy of the Western World and The Great Gatsby, women live up to their stereotype that they like to gossip or talk about one's personal business. This is seen in Playboy of the Western World when the group of girls come to the shebeen as they have heard that a new man is in town and has murdered his father. We see how word has travelled around the town quickly and the girls immediately want to see if it is true. This is also seen in The Great Gatsby when Jordan informs Nick that Tom is having an affair with a woman from New York. Jordan seems eager to tell Nick what is happening between the two even though it has nothing to do with either of them. This shows us how shallow both worlds are as they take an interest in other people's affairs even though it doesn't involve them

Marriage is seen something like a image boost in both playboy and Gatsby. The both can be talked about as a similarity since both texts kind of disregard the purpose of marriage but also alternately they also be compared- the ‘purpose’ of marriage in gatsby seems to revolve around money, possessions and image. An example of a character that shows us this would be myrtle. Myrtle is obviously only having an affair with Tom because of his money, even when they have the apartment party, myrtle doesn’t conceal the fact that she’s having an affair with a rich man only for the money. This contrasts to the purpose of marriage in playboy. Their purpose of marriage seems to be more based on prolonging the family name and having children to continue whatever they set out on. Pegeen would represent this kind of character. Pegeen doesn’t exactly concern herself with whom she’s marrying and why, but, her father does. Pegeens father was against the marriage of christy and pegeen until he considered his ‘positive’ traits. The only reason he gave the couple his blessing is because he didn’t fancy his grandchild being a coward like Shawn and he would’ve wanted them to be as brave as Christy set himself out to be.

In my opinion social class is the most evident contrast between the two plays/books. It is clear that the characters live in completely different worlds. "The Great Gatsby" is based in quite a modern rendition of New York during the economic boom of the 1920's, the residents are generally overly wealthy and have huge glistening mansions and other expensive assets. "Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water". This is quite the contrast to the people of "The Playboy of the Western World" as the majority of folk in this play are poor overly-religious farmers living in small sparsely spread villages in contrast to the clutter of New York."We were digging spuds in his cold, sloping, stony, divil's patch of a field".

" Leave me alone or I'll get the curse of the priests on you." This quote shows that the church had some sort of power at the time as Shawn uses the priests as a threat. In the GG there are no references to religion.

They are left to go back to their original lives which they were not happy in.
Christy and gatsby are both turned on. Everyone was so intrigued by Christy because of his crime and everyone wanted to be his friend. They all ended up turning against him in the end when they were involved with the crime. Similar to this, everyone loved going to gatsbys house for his elaborate parties, however when it came to his funeral, there was not one of them party-goers present. This shows that people used them for what good they could get, however never really cared.

She is then working in the local shop on Sunday morning when the “mass rush” comes in to get all of their needs. When eilish is moving to America, everyting over there was set up for her by a priest which her sister knew. We see all of these points within the first 20 minutes of the movie which portrays immediately the importance of religion in the movie
