A sylvatic plague is effecting prairie dog colonies. The black-footed ferret is a predator of prairie dogs. In order to save the ferrets, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service wants to administer an oral sylvatic plague vaccine to the prairie dogs on Charles M. Russell and UL Bend National Wildlife Refuges in northeast Montana. After testing the vaccine, it has shown to be able to reduce the effects of the plague. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now wants to administer the vaccine on a larger scale. One option is to put the vaccine in peanut butter flavored baits at 50 doses per acre. Another option is to use a drone to apply the vaccines. The public has been asked to weigh in.
