LU 2 IDENTITY AND PERCEPTIONS

Identity is a person’s perception of self within a particular social, geographical, cultural and political context. Besides that, identity is socially constructed then It also is created, reflected, and maintain through interactions among people. Identity means you know who you are, what you are, and what you want in life. People that have a strong identity have a strong sense of Self. They are inner-directed. They know themselves. They have a clear gender identity and a clear sense of their sexual preferences. They know what they like, what they want in life, how do they want to make living, and what they enjoy. They are independent of the good opinion of others. And they are able to choose freely who they want to associate with and what institutions they want to ascribe to. Here there are 7 characteristics of identity that is multifaceted, social and personal, salience and strength, fluid and stable, avowed and ascribed, passing and outing and finally performance and expression. Meanwhile, self and identity are dimensions of influence and are influenced by the way you communicate which has 3 aspects, namely self-concept, self-awareness and self-esteem. Besides that, perception is the process by which you become aware of objects, events, and especially people then perception also is an active process. Your perceptions result both from what exists in the outside world and from your own experiences, desires, needs and want, loves and hatreds. Physiological influences on perception, not only that psychological also influence on perception. so from this LU 2, I have learned that everyone has multiple identities than with the identity they can know more about themself. there have new things that I learned which are self-concept. Self-concept has 4 which is social comparison, cultural teaching, self-evaluations and the other images. Besides that, I also have learned how to improve myself by setting goals that are realistic and fair. this is because it very important for our future too. if in life we do not set goals will cause us to lose direction to continue to live life to achieve our own future. Through what I learned from this LU2, I will use what I learned by applying myself to continue to improve myself to be the better one. This is because I have ambitions that I must achieve in the future because I do not gain personal growth, it will cause me to regret not learning something new. The failure will definitely be there, but I will use the guidelines for improving self to increase my self-confidence so that I can achieve my ambitions and have a good future.

LU 3: VERBAL COMMUNICATION SKILL

Lu 3 about verbal communication which is it explains the message is transmitted through spoken words. Here the sender give words to his feeling through idea and opinion and expenses them in the form of speechless, discussions, presentations and conversation.
Words can work as symbols, arbitrary, ambiguous and also abstract. Besides that, words are denotative and connotative and words also have meanings are in people. Not only that, words are culture-bound. Denotation is the literal meaning of a word. It’s the definition we would find in the dictionary. For example, if you were to look up the word “proud” in the dictionary, a typical entry would read, “having or showing self-respect or self-esteem” That’s the denotation of the word. What does connotation mean? Connotation refers to the emotions or ideas that you think of when you read or hear a word. Let’s look at the word “proud” again. While it has a clear-cut denotation, the word can have different connotations for different people. If you hear the word proud, you might associate it with negative meanings, such as egotistical, show-off, etc. It could also have positive connotations, such as self-confidence, talent, etc. Writers will often use words with strong connotations in order to evoke certain moods in their readers. Sometimes words can develop such strong negative connotations that they are considered offensive and are no longer widely used. Denotation is the dictionary definition of a word, while connotation is the feelings associated with a word. While the denotation of a word is pretty cut and dry, one word can have many connotations for different people, and those connotations could be neutral, positive, or negative. One easy way to keep these two concepts straight is that “denotation” and “dictionary” both begin with the letter “d,” and denotation is the dictionary definition of a word.

Through this LU3 I have learned that words are powerful and we also can use words for many purposes. In addition, I have also understood how to use words for support. Where we describe our own feelings rather than evaluate behaviour and solve problems rather than control. Not only that, but I have also learned how to apologize professionally. With this, I will apply a professional way of apologizing in my daily life. Where I will offer an apology first if there is a misunderstanding with people around me. Then state my viewpoint without being hesitant or apologetic and most importantly be honest. This is because when we often say sorry to other people, people around us will feel more comfortable with our attitude if there is a misunderstanding. In addition, we must also be careful when speaking in throwing every word from the mouth because without us realizing it can give a bad time on our career or our life. Therefore, it is wise to speak so that no one will be offended by what we say. With ii life we will also be safer and more peaceful.

LU 4: NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Nonverbal communication is the process of using messages other than words to create meaning with others. The importance to learn nonverbal communication is to know that nonverbal messages are the primary way we communicate our feeling and attitudes. Besides, that is more believable than verbal messages and also create meaning. Nonverbal communication is the process of conveying a message without the use of words. It can include gestures and facial expressions, tone of voice, timing, posture and where you stand as you communicate. It can help or hinder the clear understanding of your message, but it doesn’t reveal (and can even mask) what you are really thinking. Nonverbal communication is far from simple, and its complexity makes your study and your understanding a worthy but challenging goal. Nonverbal communication gives your thoughts and feelings away before you are even aware of what you are thinking or how you feel. People may see and hear more than you ever anticipated. Your nonverbal communication includes both intentional and unintentional messages, but since it all happens so fast, the unintentional ones can contradict what you know you are supposed to say or how you are supposed to react.
To summarize, nonverbal communication is the process of conveying a message without the use of words; it relates to the dynamic process of communication, the perception process and listening, and verbal communication.

Nonverbal communication is fluid and fast, universal, confusing, and contextual. It can add to or replace verbal communication and can be intentional or unintentional. Nonverbal communication communicates feelings and attitudes, and people tend to believe nonverbal messages more than verbal ones.

Through this LU I have learned about nonverbal communication. I have learned something new about understanding nonverbal communications code. For example, eye contact. Since the visual sense is dominant for most people, eye contact is an especially important type of nonverbal communication. The way you look at someone can communicate many things, including interest, affection, hostility, or attraction. Eye contact is also important in maintaining the flow of conversation and gauging the other person’s interest and response. I don't know if it's a nonverbal communication code, it looks interesting when it's known as a kind of code. I will apply what I have learned through LU this time to my life. For example, I will use eye contact first if I want to talk to someone so that the person will feel more focused on the conversation that I will convey. Learning in Lu is very interesting and it is something that we do in our daily lives, especially about this nonverbal communication code. by knowing all this he has given me the knowledge of the principles of nonverbal communication. I will learn more about this verbal communication code so that it can be used while in the workplace to interact with clients or colleagues.

This LU I have to learn about listening. Hearing is a physiological activity that involves sound waves hitting our eardrums meanwhile listening is an active, complex process. Besides that, listening is an important component of effective communication. Then, listening is a skill we can learn. Listening well (mindful) in both parts of receiving and giving feedback. After that, mindful listening makes all the difference which stops where we stop thinking about what we are going to say, just listen. Secondly is notice where notice our thoughts and feelings, not just words or content.

Thirdly, suspend that we suspend our judgement briefly. Listen carefully first before we judge. There also have the listening process which is mindfulness and then physically receiving messages and then selecting and organizing material. After that, interpreting communication then responding and the last remembering. There have many benefits of effective listening. Which is improves relations and also can avoid conflict then improves understanding.

Through Lu, I learned about listening and the importance of listening. Through this listening, we can get information by being mindful, controlling obstacles, asking questions, use aids to recall and organize information. I am interested in the topic this time about listening. This is because a lot of information can be understood based on this topic. For example, through listening, we will get many benefits as well which can avoid a conflict. With this, it will not affect our daily life with the people around us. Apart from that, I will also use what I have learned in my life by making the best use of the listening function and not abusing it. This is because if we do not listen clearly or focus on what others want to convey, it will cause us to lose information and cause conflict among family, colleagues or friends. For example, A conveys important information to B but B ignores it and is less focused on the information conveyed. It will cause the delivery of incorrect information to the party C.Therefore, I think this part of listening is also very important in our interaction with others. In conclusion, I think this listening can be beneficial to our future where it can be applied as a good attitude by always focusing on what other parties want to convey while working so as not to accumulate wrong information.

Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages. Information is conveyed as words, tone of voice and body language. Interpersonal communication can be used to give and collect information.

Then, influence the attitudes and behaviour of others and also form contacts and maintain relationships. There have many advantages of interpersonal relationships which is can gain self-knowledge and self-esteem and enhance physical and emotional health. Besides that, it also can maximize pleasures and minimize pains. If there have advantages, they also will have disadvantages. Which is increases obligations and prevent from developing other relationships or abandoning other relationships. After that, being scared of possibilities then also can hurt your feelings. There have 6 stages of model relationship which is contact, involvement, intimacy, deterioration, repair and dissolution.
Besides that, there are also have 4 types of interpersonal relationships. Which are family, friends, love and the workplace. Through the LU we get to know Friendship is a term used to indicate cooperative and supportive behaviour between two or more people. In this sense, the term points to a relationship that involves mutual knowledge, esteem, and affection and respect along with a degree of rendering service to friends in times of need or crisis. After that, love is a feeling characterized by closeness, caring, intimacy, passion, and commitment. Love is an interpersonal relationship developed, maintained, and sometimes destroyed by communication. So, communication skills can enhance a love relationship. The family includes the children, relatives, and assorted significant others surrounding a primary relationship. A primary relationship denotes the two relationships between the two principal parties. Communication patterns of nuclear families apply to all forms of families. Lastly, for the workplace relationship, there have mentoring relationships. Crucial for rising in a hierarchy and developing skills and also can be online too.

Through this Lu, I feel very excited about the topic this time. This is because I know that love has many types, namely Eros, Ludus, Storge, Pragma, Mania and Agape. In addition, each type of love has a different meaning and is very dancing to learn. Love and communication can Increase self-disclosure. Then can self-disclosure means making the self known to others, letting others know what you think, feel, and want.
Besides that, self-disclosure can also create a trusting environment that is conducive to promoting long-term relationships. I will take advantage of what I have learned with friendship needs, which is to know more about what a friendship wants. For example, I can support my friend no matter what job he or she chooses in the future. This can further strengthen the friendship between me and my friends. The knowledge I found starting this LU, was able to give me about the importance of such a relationship in our lives. This is because it can make us successful in the future because of the support of friends, family, colleagues and our life partners.

LU 7: LECTURE ON GROUP COMMUNICATIO

Group communication means the interaction of three or more interdependent members working to achieve a common goal. There has 5 component of group communication which is members, goals, interaction, working and independence. The purpose of group communication is to share and exchange information and ideas. Besides that, to collect information or feedback on any project and to arrive at a decision on important matters
Group communication requires interaction. Each group member is affected and influenced by the actions of the other members. Group members work together to achieve a common goal. Understanding the purposes, roles and advantages of working in a group may lead to successful group work. There are also have some tips that have been shared in this lecture on how to succeed in the group. At the start of any team project, you should spend our first meeting agreeing on specific targets and setting some ground rules. It's a good idea to decide how often we'll meet, how you'll communicate with each other and how the group will be led. This way, everyone is clear about what is expected of them. we should also ensure that all team members have a shared understanding of the project. Discuss how you can best divide the task up to work to the advantage of everyone within the group. All members of the group should strive to create a supportive atmosphere that allows everyone to feel comfortable expressing their thoughts without the threat of being dismissed, ridiculed or ignored. While some people are naturally confident in group work situations, others may initially find putting their points forward challenging. We may need to ask some quieter individuals directly if they have anything to add. The group will benefit from hearing everyone's opinion and others may have valuable insight that we have not considered. Not everyone strives to be a leader or is able to quickly generate ideas. Indeed, the best teams have a balanced mix of individuals whose contributions complement one another. While disagreements are inevitable, it's important not to make things personal. Try to ensure that discussion and disagreements are focused on the task at hand. If we have an issue with the level of commitment of certain members, speak to them individually and check there's not something else going on that they may need your support with.

Through this lecture, I feel very interested to discuss this topic because it is related to group communication. Since I am also a student so I feel very happy with this topic related to group communication at least I have learned how to be a successful group. this is because students who have many group assignments must also experience many problems in their group discussions. Through this lecture, it has taught me how to handle group communication with members so as not to cause any conflict. Although this group communication is actually easy to cause misunderstandings with group members so that it can affect the assignment. With this, I feel grateful for having learned something new in this lecture because I can practice it in my work environment so that I can lead my group to success together.

Organizational assimilation also has 2 sources which are formal and informal sources.

This last chapter has indirectly made me better understand the importance of social interaction in our lives. This is because a lot has been learned during these 8 lectures and gave me new knowledge about the importance of social interaction through communication with friends, family, the workplace and our partners. Organizational communication is very important to know so that it is not easy to fail in operating an organization. I will take advantage of what I have learned through this lecture 8 more carefully with colleagues. this faucet indirectly may also occur sexual harassment from co-workers. therefore, this matter should be emphasized in an organisation and should be avoided in order to maintain the image of the organization.
