When I hear the phrase, "professional development," I often feel suspicious or worried that he presenter will be boring and not demonstrate her material. Or that the presenter is shilling a book or product.

A sacrifice I've made to particate in COP is putting tremendous strain on my time management skills. The remote-teaching and stay-at-home orders challenges my priority, time management, and self-managements skills.

So far, one big lesson I' relearning is how much I appreciate my teaching colleagues. I learn a lot from the hallway chats and copy room convos, and when in formal settings like these, I know I'll walk away with something I can use right away - or slowly integrate into my teaching plan.

When I hear the phrase "professional development," I feel both excited and stressed. I love PD and am consistently seeking new ways to improve my teaching practices. But for me, PD often means time away from my family which means finding childcare or making sure my project doesn't conflict with another family obligation.

A sacrifice I've made to participate in CoP is with family time and other commitments. While there isn't a lack of family time during the "shelter-in-place", I find it isn't necessarily "quality time" as I'm navigating all my jobs (and there are many).

So far, one of of the lessons I've learned isn't something new but I am always reminded of how talented and inspirational my colleagues are. I wish each presenter had their own day! We need more time to digest these lessons and put them into practice.... Ohhh, we need a CoP retreat! That would be amazing...

Sometimes they're an infusion of energy and love, and sometimes they're the biggest drag in the world.

A sacrifice I've made to participate in COP is, well, my body. I just had my first round of screen-induced vertigo because of the over-use of screens this semester. I need to do better!

So far, one big lesson has been the mindfulness lesson. It really connected to what I'm missing the most for myself right now. Then I perk up and think ... now something of value.

One sacrifice I made to participate in this professional development program is cutting way back for a few days on my personal enjoyment reading, which really keeps me sane.

So far, one of the big "gets" or lessons I learned during CoP (I'm assuming this one) is how far I really have to go with effective distance education. But, this 70 year old brain is picking up some things, really.

1) When I hear the phrase "professional development," I typically wonder if it is going to be directed at my needs. Often when I wind up in PD, I find that the topics have been directed toward instructors in the sciences or mathematics, and I struggle to find ways to employ the lessons to my own material.
2) One sacrifice I made to participate in this professional development program is my weekly RPG night. I have been Game Master for a tabletop RPG on Friday nights with some out-of-town friends over the web during quarantine, and between grading and this, I haven't had time to prepare for this evening's planned session.
3) So far, one of the big "gets" or lessons I learned during COP is how VoiceThread and Padlet can be employed in online learning. I've been really stressed about ways to transition in-class discussion to an online environment, and just experiencing these technologies has been very relieving.

When I think of the phrase staff development I like it. I used to be a substitute teacher in high school and middle school at SUHSD and we received little to no staff development. We did not have any union representation as well. When I became an adjunct, I made it a point to learn as much as I could. Second, I made it a point to work with the union.

One sacrifice I made for this professional development is that I feel a bit overworked. The semester was rough and I need a break. I have several meetings I am working on because "I accept other duties as NOT assigned BUT expected AND doing what is right." I think we are all making these huge sacrifices.

So far, the BIG GETS I have gotten from the COP have been to remember and think of my students as humans. As I learn about all the practices, I must balance this with the "expectations of professionals in my field." I can post memes, bit-mojis, padlets, and other such things, but it is all in the service of rigorous academic work. I can be like San Sebastian and let every story pierce my body, but there are tasks to do. Other professionals are expecting I prepare my students correctly.

All along I thought it would work itself out since the bar has been closed, but "Surprise" they decided to re-open the bar on Wednesday. Normally I would have had no problem giving up my weekend shifts, but now we are so short-staffed that no one wants and/or can work them...so I guess I'm sacrificing time to sleep, but this has been super helpful so it is worth it!
3... is all the helpful suggestions and examples in the Modules sharing how to use and incorporate all the online teaching strategies and technological tools to promote student success.

I am already SUPER busy all the time and let's be real, seriously underpaid and undervalued as an Adjunct. Admittedly, I have suffered through the wasted days PDPs but there have also been ones that were kinda magical! Some really memorable PDP events for me that were actually quite amazing: Angela Davis speaking at SWC...also tbh this CoP is really good stuff. I am an introvert so PDP is also super hard for me at times, and this CoP is not something I would usually do but I am really, really glad I did. I am feeling really good about all of the ideas, support, and community and I also really appreciate (and really needed) the time and space to check in with my own teaching practices and values.

Though tangible examples are often employed, I find that the standardization of many PD tools neglects the students (or teachers) who don't fit into the requisite box to implement those tips.

One sacrifice I have made to participate in this development is simply the time I need to dedicate to wrapping up my semester vis-a-vis grades, and planning for the summer, which includes completing my DEFT training and reading a text I'm teaching for the first time (What was I thinking?!). Oh, and I still need to do my taxes!

So far, one of the big lessons I've gotten from CoP is that I need to return to a thematic breakdown of the course material (like an English class) rather than a chronological trajectory (like a History class) that the course has become.

When I hear the phrase "professional development: I typically feel hopeful about what I'll be able to take away from it and apply in my classes.
One sacrifice I made to participate in this PD is sleep. :-)

So far, the one big "gets" or lessons learned learned during COP is...really? Where do I begin? There are quite a number of takeaways from texts to incorporate to practices. I'm planning to steal entire pages for my online courses. And I got to meet colleagues. Typically assigned to classes off campus, I rarely get to interact with colleagues, so this was a treat! Okay, that was more than one sentence. I'll stop.
