In 1902, when he was 4, my great-grandfather, Carmello Quatrochi, came to Brazil in a ship, which left Italy and came to Brazil bringing italians, who were searching for a new home, to our country. Since then, a long story was created by him. He married my great-grandmother, Maria, and she gave birth to my grandpa and his 2 siblings. Quatrochi, an Calabrian surname, is the fusion of two words: Quattro, which means number FOUR (4) in italian, and Occhi, italian translation for EYES. So, Quatrochi = Four eyes.

“They lived in a ridiculously small house in Calabria, southern Italy. “Vó Maria” (my great-grandma) was an angel. If there was any fun in this world, all of it was inside her. “Vô Carmello”was a classic nervous italian, just like all of our family.” Me: What about my grandma, Rachel? “Well, in few words, the kindest woman i’ve ever met. She was a light in the world, she treated us like we were babies our entire life, and when she saw you (me) for the first time, she bursted into tears and she knew you (me) was her new love. She held you like you were a king and I knew she had a hard time letting go of you. When she died, me, your mom, “Tia Ana” and “Tio Marco” knew what she had lost, the oportunity to see you grow.”

“Vô Carmello had no money, so he needed to do something about it. He, with the little money he had from his father, opened a “mercearia” in Araraquara, the city they were dropped when the ship arrived in Brazil. He started selling cheeses, coffee, handmade sweets, until he had my grandpa. When he turned 14, he started working with him, and helping in the sales. They made a lot of money with that. Fortunately, Vô Carmello died at old age after watching his son get married and become a father.

My uncle Eduardo, was always a fat little kid. He loved to eat. And that came to his life when he decided to study gastronomy in Italy. He got a degree in such, and opened, paired with my mom, who had a degree in international commerce and economy, 9 italian restaurants across Araraquara and São Carlos. They’ve all closed because my mom decided to leave the business and my uncle decided to change. Today, he owns the BEST Pastifício in Araraquara. Pastifício Quatrochi. They make different types of italian Pasta, Sauces, Pies and Sweets. He has multiple sales point in the city, one of them being my grandpa’s “mercearia”. My mom is the youngest daughter of all. Since very young, she was always a sporty. When she was my age, she was a swimmer and had alwas won lots of prizes by that. Older, she went into the volleyball business and got a high school scholarship in Corning, a small town in the state of New York, USA. There, she decided she wanted to study international commerce, giving her language and trading abilities. She had high level jobs in large companies, for example: Before I was born, she was the Marketing and Tasting CEO of Hershey’s Brasil. But that wasn’t for her. Today, she’s a beach tennis teacher and coordinates her own academy, and absolutely LOVES her job. As I’ve said, she has always been a sporty.

Funiculí Funiculà by Luigi Denza is the “song of the family”. We’re a really big family of classic italians, angry and sometimes, we do “janjisses”, which means a dumb thing. Someone who does a “janjisse” is a “janjo” (pronouced Djandjo) For example, when someone stumbles and falls in the ground or in the pool in the family meetings (has happened many times) we all burst out laughing and sing this song.

Link for the song: https://youtu.be/yTSAZAHiOa8

The band played a specific funny song with trumpets around town, to sponsor the circus. He and his friends used to go with the band singing the song so they could get in for free. With them, there was always this portuguese lady who farted very loud, so he says. We also sing that when someone does a Janjisse, but with a fart sound at the end. Everyone always just bursts out laughing.
