Give students options. For example, some students may want to work individually rather than in a group. Offer different types of assessments that accommodate different strengths of the students. Some may be great test takers, some may do better writing a paper, giving a presentation, or other types of projects. There are many different ways to assess mastery, and giving students choices empowers them to choose what works best for them.

One way to engage students is to have them reflect on their own learning process. For example, when giving exit tickets after the lessons, you can ask students to make sure they didn't skip any steps before turning it in. Or, when students are doing independent work, you can correct the students' work and have them fix it on the spot. :) Another way could be, they can have their own writing journal where they can reflect on how the lesson went or how they felt about it.

Each student is given different questions and after each question is answer they keep playing the game. This keeps them engaged and encouraged to try their best on answering the questions on correct because it gives them points or access to add things to their game.

In order to this, one must know your students' interests so that you can capture their attention at the start of the lesson. - Nelson Barrionuevo
