Charles is also seen to openly argue with the members of the court for their mistreatment of him as their rightful king in saying his grandfather "was so wise he used up the whole family stock of wisdom for five generations, and left me the poor fool I am, bullied and insulted by all of you." Here witty humour is expressed as Charles mocks his wise grandfather, who commands respect from everyone, while openly bringing up the mistreatment of himself. This creates irony due to the contrast in people's views on the two rulers and the way Charles portrays them in his speech, making it rather whimsical and humourous. It also enhances the effect of Charles' victimization, evoking pity in the reader/audience for Charles. This proves Charles' ability to manipulate his audience using words to gain favour for himself.
