we are maybe more interested in ideas surrounding shared lineage vs highly personal and unique stories
illustrating to our audience and shining a light on how we are all interconnected through nature
- the oneness of everything
- its role in our psychological development as early humans (language and art)
- how modern societies aren’t that great for our brains and bodies as they are now
wearing the costume and becoming the character itself can be a method of reconnection to the ground and earth
by covering the whole body, the typical markers we read of the wearer’s identity (their face, body shape, race, age etc) get lost - easier for the audience to see themselves in the work?

re-framing sensitivity and hyper-awareness as a virtue and strength - about 1 in 5 people’s brains are hardwired to higher states of arousal, language and phrases like ‘you’re too sensitive’, and ‘be strong’ shape the idea that it is a weakness

mycelium and mushrooms

A costume that looks like it could be part of the earth, that breathes and can move across the landscape
large and mound-like?
could have fruiting mushrooms at the top of the head moving down to the roots and mycelium
could have lighting like LEDs, UV or glow-in-the-dark paint

internal shadow puppets - revealed through light

a blanket type covering that has a hidden inner world, a light would reveal shadows cast inside the costume

animal abandonment from humans - why do we see animals as lesser beings and some as ‘vermin’, pigeons got left behind by us

a costume that looks like a pigeon that also feeds and maybe has water for them

the majority of the fungus organism spreads underground into a huge three-dimensional network of long threads, this network is called the mycelium

every footstep you take covers around 300 miles of an underground mycelium network

mushrooms are the fruiting bodies and sexual organs of fungus

650 million years ago we divided from fungi,
mycelium is the mother of us all :-)

the human cortex tripled in size over 2 million years. this is an incredibly short period for such evolution to occur. the 'stoned ape' theory suggests psychoactive compounds found in some mushrooms may be one factor in leading this change in early humans.

how hard wearing is it? will it only have one wear?
what is the inside like? is it significant?
where will it be worn? (in a natural landscape, in the city, what time of day)

- design a manifesto/ set of rules and a structure for us to follow

- how will the audience receive the costume?

a performance?
a sequential moving image or book work?
is it part of a workshop?

- how will it be worn and how will it encourage the wearer to move

what are the ways you can change how the wearer moves? (sew rices into it to make it heavy, inflatable fans or helium balloons to enlarge it)

- will it encourage people to touch it or avoid it?

- fungi have untapped potential to be used as medicine and to help manage climate crises
- we want our costume to have the tangible/mystery of fungi and allow the wearer/viewer to make their own connection with nature
- the variety in colour, form and texture of fungi inspire us artistically to push boundries
- the organic structure of the costume could be an immersive environment - full body, large, breathes/inflates, weighs you down
- the costume should be wearable/not too difficult to take on and off

We were asked what route will the presentation and interactive element (if any) take?
We should think about and decide how we want to tell the story - is it educational, performative? Does it exist in a public or private space?
One helpful question to keep asking ourselves to guide us ‘why should this story be told?’
It’s better to try lots and push yourself, learn a lot even if it doesn’t resolve perfectly than do what you always know how to do
