In fact it is a tourist site, it is more like a museum than a true cathedral temple because it is not the seat of any prelate. The architectural and artistic design of the new Cathedral of Sal, is characteristic of the Bogota architect Roswell Garavito Pearl, which was approved after the election of the project that contained a total of 44 proposals in a contest convened by the Colombian Society of Architects in 1990; While the technical engineering direction was executed by the Bogota engineer Jorge Enrique Castelblanco Reyes.

Since the mid-1990s, Botero had raised the possibility of donating his entire art collection to the Antioquia Museum in Medellín. However, the slowness in decision-making by the Antioquian authorities led him to accept the proposal of the then mayor of Bogota, Enrique Peñalosa, to donate his collection to Bogota. Although Peñalosa proposed to build a new museum to house it, the artist preferred to deliver his private art collection, valued at more than 200 million dollars, to the Bank of the Republic of Colombia in Bogota, an institution with a long history of cultural activities related to Numismatics, art and libraries, and in whose Library Luis Angel Arango had exposed the series of La Corrida years ago.
