Technically, the progressive era was a reaction to the laissez-faire economics and its emphasis on an unregulated market. Progressives were involved in both political parties. They were mainly urban, educated, middle-class Americans. Their leaders were journalists, social workers, educators, politicians, and members of the clergy. They doubted that the government could fix their problems before it fixed itself. Quaker social worker and former NAWSA member Alice Paul founded the National Woman's Party. Alice Paul was further arrested for picketing the white house.
