South Sudan has been launched into a devastating 5 year civil war, and famine and genocide fears are a daily stress for the people who must experience it everyday. It all started when Riek Machar, former vice president, was accused of plotting a coup against Salva Kiir, the president. Machar wanted to overthrow the government and because of that a civil war has been uprooted. The war has deepend rifts between ethnic groups and become a huge issue for the South Sudanese people.

The war has caused many hardships for millions of South Sudanese people. Estimates show that over a quarter of the population have been displaced from their homes and the government is rapidly targeting ethnic groups. There have been 400,000 “excess deaths” as a result of violent injuries. And about 6 million people are facing severe hunger and food insecurity. Not only that, but 15,000 children have been separated from their families. It is a scary and dangerous time for the people of South Sudan.

C. Why should the rest of the world be concerned?

In South Sudan half of the population is starving or facing food insecurity. On the other hand, only 1 in 6 people in America are hungry. Another important issue that is occurring in South Sudan is sexual abuse. Many women don’t feel safe enough to return to their homes. Over the last 10 day period, 125 women have been beaten, robbed, and raped in Bentiu, a South Sudanese town. In comparison, the USA annual sexual abuse rate has decreased to every 2.1 per 1,000. That is a drastic amount less than what is happening in South Sudan. Another estimated 383,000 people have been killed as a result of the civil war. The world should be concerned by this issue. It's taking the lives of many innocent people.

D. What is currently being done to address this problem?

South Sudan’s civil war was supposed to end last year, with the signing of a peace deal but unfortunately, fighting continues. Luckily the United Kingdom has been helping with their mission to end fighting in South Sudan (UNMISS). Military troops have opened a hospital and are working to keep displaced citizens safe. Over 300 British troops are deployed over South Sudan and the UK contributed around $53,300,000 to what? In Bentiu, UK troops upgraded the roads so, women will no longer have to make the long journey and will be less likely to the risk of attack. Gavin Williamson has also funded a “Female only safe space” which is working to voice victims of sexual violence and kidnap. Although the situation in South Sudan is horrible, there are many people that are working to help and restore this broken country.
