I really like this image that I saw on a teaching group on facebook. I keep this on my office wall to remind myself how to position myself as a teacher/facilitator in my teaching practice. For me the main characteristic of a teacher as a facilitator is the positioning. I go to every class to learn just as the other participants.

| think that this photo represents what it usually happens in my classes. I do not consider my self a teacher, I always say that I’m a facilitator.

I do not love staying behind the desk. While they are working in groups I prefer walking through the students, listening to their impressions or ideas or just observe the way they collaborate. Sometimes I love sitting with them, as if I were a student, listening and giving some pieces of advice (if it is necessary).

The facilitator is not a friend, but he has to create a friendly and relaxed mood in the class. In this situation people can feel free also to do mistakes (by which they can learn) without being afraid of being judged .

Here are my students in their non-formal learnig class, and as you see, students feel comfortable, working and enjoying their experience with different type of people. And a facilitator should be: TOLERANT, FLEXIBLE, PATIENT, FRIENDLY, CREATIVE AND SUPPORTIVE.

is someone who comes prepared and ready to adapt. They have to be prepared (have general course goals) but who are ready to adjust them according to the needs of the learners as they facilitate the class each session. Each time, they asess and adjust their goals in light of the results of that assessment.

A good facilitator must be chameleonic in order to be seen as a mate instead of as a teacher by the students.
He/she needs to cover the students neccesities acting as another participant as well as motivate them to participate and keep learning.
