My perception of mental health in the 21st century is that there are a lot more services that are in place to help and protect people suffering from mental health issues. They can go and get help for the issues without having to feel like an outsider or feel like they are going to get locked up for having mental health problems. The stigma attached with having a mental illness has decreased over the last 100 years because people are a lot more open to talking about the problems and finding help

However there is still a significant amount of stigma surrounding the topic of mental health, and more needs to be done to encourage people to seek help if they feel they are struggling, and how to help people who are potentially struggling, and information to give them on how to recieve the help they need.

Sonia;

There has been a great advancement in terms of how mental illness is perceived. Whereas once, those with mental illness were situated in the same category as vagrants and delinquents, and treatments included electro-convulsive therapy, today the illness is looked at in a much more serious matter. There is a wide foundation of scientific study, as well as many facilities and centres located in cities in order to provide assistance and help for those seeking it. Advancements in technology have also allowed for objective views to be taken into the underlying causes and results of mental illnesses. There is however, a long way to go. In sectors such as education and employment, there seems to be a lack of understanding of mental illnesses and as a result, the contribution to the stigma around such issues is still prevalent. There are many ambiguous and obscure views held in relation to those who currently have and those who have had mental illnesses.

Today, the media covers a wide range of mental health issues and many programmes on TV introduce forums in order to create a community of those who feel they would like to understand the topics better.

Psychotherapy is more useful nowadays as talking about how you're feeling to those around you may make mental illness patients feel confident and more open minded. Others may avoid people with mental illnesses as they think they arent the same as them and might treat them differently.

My perception of mental health in the 21st century is that it is acknowledged especially in the western world. Personally I think there is room for improvement in our society because I don't think looking after your mental health is still emphasised from a young age like physical health is. Even in secondary schools there are cases of young people who are self harming and taking their lives due to bullying, and it's a scary thought that someone as young as 11 can be comprehending such and we still don't emphasis it enough. Also cultural perspectives differs, some cultures are still ignorant and still yet to understanding mental health can effect anyone for various reasons that might not be in the control of the person suffering from an mental illness. The statistics on sucide rates and self harm in ethnic groups are concerning in today's society. It shows how we are still far from breaking the stigma of mental illness

Going as far back as 400 BC, was when mental disorders were first understood in terms of disturbed physiology rather than the wrath of gods or demonic possession. In today's society I believe mental illnesses comes with less stigmatisation and discrimination than in the past centuries. Discrimination still exists and is prominent in our societies but as technology and our understanding of mental illnesses develops I believe society becomes more understanding and sympathetic towards the mentally ill. There are now better facilities for the mentally ill and they are taken care of in a better way.

I believe that topic of mental health is something that has always been considered taboo and so this has led to people with mental health issues to be stigmatised for a long time.
