More algae than I could eat? And when I yearned for variety, more meerkats and fish than I could ever desire? If the island floated and moved, might it not move in the right direction? Might it not turn out to be a vegetable ship that brought me to land? In the meantime, did I not have these delightful meerkats to keep me company? But crazed with thirst and hunger he will surmount his fear, and he will do whatever is necessary to appease his need. He will turn this moat into a bridge. We fight no matter the cost of battle, the losses we take, the improbability of success. We fight to the very end. It's not a question of courage. It's something constitutional, an inability to let go. It may be nothing more than life-hungry stupidity” (148).

As Pi begins to understand the gravity of his predicament, he starts to formulate plans to deal with each of his issues; unsurprisingly,(; transition,) the most pressing of these issues is Richard Parker. Pi's earliest plan, a flawed, hastily created strategy(appositive), was to outlast Richard Parker using his access to plentiful resources aboard his makeshift raft to survive. Pi is banking on Richard Parker succumbing to dehydration, asking, "where would he get water?" (159). Soon after however, Pi realizes the fault in his plan being that "As for water, have you forgotten that tigers from the Sundarbans are known to drink saline water? Do you really think you can outlast his kidneys?" (160). This clearly demonstrates how Pi is having to change himself this early on by problem solving and finding weaknesses in his plans so that he does not become the victim of a careless mistake. Pi also begins to dig deeper into the differences between his own hierarchy of needs and Richard Parkers. Pi realizes that these will be either his saving grace or the nail in his coffin as he examines how he can use them to benefit his future plans for survival. Quickly he realizes that he is outmatched in terms of straight out survival, leading him to the only solution which is to tame the big cat (participle). This will be a massive shift in character for Pi as his original plans involved killing Richard Parker or letting him die. This shows how Pi is being forced to change as his situation evolves further out of his control.
