Climate change is a serious issue that requires attention, but it doesn't have to be at the expense of social and economic progress.

For a government with 15% of GDP from tourism, climate change is both a threat and an opportunity.

On one hand, rising sea - levels, extreme weather events like stronger hurricanes, heatwaves and droughts can damage tourist destinations. This could lead to a decline in tourism revenue and harm the local economy.

On the other hand, taking steps to address climate change can also bring benefits. For example, developing sustainable tourism, such as ecotourism, can attract more environmentally - conscious tourists and diversify the tourism product.

Rather than seeing it as a choice between combating climate change and economic progress, government can adopt a balanced approach.

Global tourism is not a significant contributor to damaging climate change, especially for travelers seeking novelty and excitement. Some traditional heavy industry, deforestation and so on are far more damaging to the climate than tourists. But it also has a moral obligation to drastically reduce its greenhouse gas footprint and educate tourists to change their travel behavior, because tourism activities also contribute to climate damage.

We are a sustainable development goals working group from the UN, and climate action is one of the 17 sustainable development goals. Our view is that tourism development must have an impact on climate change and is responsible for global climate change. There is data that shows that the researchers concerned have calculated that the researchers can calculate the estimated carbon emissions for the entire cycle of international tourism. Their research shows that tourism contributes 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Firstly, during tourism, tourists' transport generates a lot of carbon emissions, especially by plane and car.

Secondly, tourists will use a lot of disposable utensils and air-conditioners during accommodation; they may use disposable tableware and consume a lot of ingredients during meals.

Then, tourism activities and the construction of tourist attractions will destroy ecological resources such as soil, forests and water, leading to an imbalance in the ecosystem

Finally, the provision of tourism services requires the construction of a large number of infrastructures, a process that also results in a large amount of carbon emissions.

As an urban resident and a traveler, I believe the global tourism industry significantly contributes to climate change and bears a moral obligation to reduce its environmental impact.

From my perspective, tourism’s footprint is evident in our cities, with increased pollution and congestion. As hosts, we demand sustainable practices to protect our urban environments. We expect the industry to invest in eco-friendly initiatives and educate tourists on responsible travel.

As a tourist, I’ve witnessed the disappearance of cherished destinations due to environmental degradation. This is a call to action for the industry to preserve our natural and cultural heritage. It’s crucial to promote eco-conscious travel and protect the places we love to visit.

Although climate change has brought about many impacts, such as temperature variations, an increase in extreme weather events, changes in the environment and landscape, and threats to biodiversity, I don't agree that it is a drastic change that requires society to take urgent and radical measures at the expense of social and economic progress.

The self-regulating ability of the Earth: Studies have shown that the Earth can regulate its own temperature on a timescale of thousands of years. There exists a "stabilizing feedback" mechanism that can pull the climate back from the brink of danger and keep the global temperature within a stable and habitable range. This means that climate change may not be a completely out-of-control and irreversible process of rapid deterioration. To some extent, the Earth has its own coping mechanisms.

The importance of tourism to the economy and its adaptability: Tourism is an important part of the economy in many regions, bringing in a large amount of income and employment opportunities. If overly radical measures are taken to address climate change, for example, if some tourist destinations overly restrict tourism activities or invest huge costs in making modifications that do not conform to the actual situation, it may cause serious impacts on the local economy and society. Moreover, tourism can adapt to climate change through some relatively mild and sustainable ways, such as adjusting the structure of tourism products, optimizing tourism times and routes. For example, the extension of the beach season in some areas and the development of rural and coastal tourism may be new opportunities brought about by climate change, which can, to some extent, balance the relationship between addressing climate change and economic development.

From the government's point of view, global tourism is indeed an important contributor to climate change, and its moral obligation is to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) footprint. The government plays a key role in ensuring this transformation.

Tourism accounts for about 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, mainly from air travel, accommodation and land transportation. The government has the responsibility to solve these emission problems by setting strict environmental standards. This may include encouraging low-carbon transportation options, such as replacing short-haul flights by high-speed railways, and encouraging the development of environmentally friendly accommodation through subsidies and certifications. In addition, the government can implement a carbon pricing mechanism within the tourism industry to calculate environmental costs, so as to promote the innovation of sustainable practises.

In addition to regulation, the government has a responsibility to educate tourists and businesses about sustainable travel behaviour. For example, explore local destinations or choose eco-certified tours. The government can also cooperate with international organisations to ensure coordinated efforts.

Finally, moral obligations extend to ensuring that the climate actions of the tourism industry do not disproportionately damage the local economy that depends on the industry. The government must strike a balance by promoting sustainable tourism models that preserve economic benefits for communities while reducing environmental impacts.

In essence, the government has a practical and moral responsibility to guide the tourism industry towards a sustainable future.

Since climate change is hurting the places we travel to, tourism has to do something.

We can use marketing tools such as advertisements and promotional videos to educate travelers about the importance of ecotourism before and during the tour.

Additionally, our organization can shape a green urban image through actions. We can regularly hosts festivals, conferences, or other large - scale events related to ecotourism.
