I’m in my junior year of high school at Springfield Central High and a member of ROTC at my school. I didn’t really want to join ROTC but under pressure from my dad, David Butler, I joined. My best friends are English, Shannon, and Carlos. Every Friday night we go to a party where we drink and have fun. But one day that all changed. I was getting some chips for my friends and I from Jerry’s Corner Mart when I was accused for stealing from the store. I claimed my innocence but in the end I was beaten to unconsciousness by a white police officer I later found out was Paul Galluzzo. While I was recovering in the hospital from my broken ribs and bones I couldn’t wait for all of this to blow over. My father didn’t believe me and the attention my story drew me from the media and public was embarrassing. I wanted to just disappear.  My opinion on the situation changed after listening to my brother Spoony speak about how we have to do something, and how it was unfair that what happened to me happened to so many other African Americans around the world. Spoony’s passionate speaking and Shirley Fitgerard’s stories of the Civil Rights movement gave me courage and motivation to fight against police brutality and defend those who have suffered from it as I have.
