Guangzhou is China’s busiest transport and trade hub. It is an important trading point with Hong Kong. It is an electronic and clothing manufacture center and a trade hub for international merchants. China has 40 major categories of industrial sectors all together, Guangzhou has 34 of those categories. It isn't a very tourist driven city so its main income is trading between countries. It has:

an integrated steel complex

paper mills

a long-established textile industry

factories producing machinery and small appliances

Traditional arts and crafts, mainly ivory and jade carvings, are still produced in the city.

Many people live in Guangzhou because of its strong economy, offering more jobs. Because the city is still expanding its manufacturing and business area, there are more jobs everyday. Like many other cities, people are also attracted to the historical infrastructure in the city like the historic buildings that are located in the older regions of Guangzhou. The education in Guangzhou offers high quality private schools and international schools appealing to people who want to raise a family and do not speak the language of the city. The culture brings people to the city too, with lots of restaurants in the city cooking Cantonese cooking in many different ways.

Guangzhou is one of the twenty-four famous historical and cultural cities in China. It does not, however, have the amount of cultural attractions found in some cities such as Beijing and Xian. Guangzhou possesses rich culture resources with a history, including 219 sites of culture relics, 26 museums with a total collection of 90,000 pieces, 16 preservation zones and 21 zones of restricted access for relics protection. A cultural event is the Mid-Autumn festival. In the festival the people of Guangzhou hang lanterns, eat river snails and worship the moon. Lots of people celebrate the festival by cruising down the Pearl River. Most countries would have Christmas off work, but Christmas isn't a Chinese holiday, and most people work on Christmas, unless it falls on a weekend.

The current population of Guangzhou is 13 million. The density of Guangzhou is now around 1800 people per square kilometre. The region around Guangzhou is know for its huge influx of migrants, with up to 30 million additional migrants living in the areas for at least 6 months out of every year. The number of migrants in Guangzhou increases by around 300,000 each year. This means that Guangzhou is growing too fast for its infrastructure and public services, so its population should begin to stabilise if the government approves the population controls its attempting. Guangzhou has grown by 612,000 in the last year, which represents a 4.90% change. The main religion of Guangzhou is Buddhism. The official language of Guangzhou is mandarin but most local people speak Cantonese (Guangzhou was once called Canton City).

Urban problems in Guangzhou include:

Homeless- There are about 2.41 million homeless in Guangzhou. This is about a sixth of the city's population.

Traffic- The traffic is quite bad in Guangzhou. Like most cities there are cars everywhere and it will take hours to get through everything.

Health Issues- There are a lot of bars in the city and they tend to sell fake liquor and spike drinks. You could even get sick form the pollution so you should wear a mask.

Slums- The slums are called 'urban villages'. There are about 138 'urban villages' is Guangzhou. Guangzhou is known as the Slum city’ due to the number of cheap and poorly built houses that roughly takes up 20% of the whole city.

My solution to the 'Slums' would be for the City Authorities to either stop the increasing amount of migrants coming in or offer more well paid jobs to those new to the city.
