You can differentiated this activity bye using smaller words. At home parents can also show students a picture and tell them to sound it out.

In lower grades teachers can ask students to retell a story by drawing pictures. Teachers can also ask the 5 W's to make sure the student's comprehended everything correctly. At home parents can read to students and have them retell what has happened in a story or simply have them tell them about a specific event or their day at school.
