Based on CAASPP Data and Feedback from teachers, we are calibrating our instructional and assessment practices about writing, ensuring that we have writing samples as formative data for our PLC. This padlet will house resources for this purpose.

WHY?

Data indicates that on a 4-4-2 SBAC rubric, our students score an average of 1.7, 1.6, and 4.5. They score the highest in the Narrative Genre and lowest in the Argumentative/Explanatory Genre. EUSD needs an explicit and systematic writing curriculum that rests on solid evidence.

WHAT CAN WE USE?

We can take inspiration from CAASPP/SBAC Resources!

As prompts, we can use the SBAC "Browse Items" website to pick a prompt. Access HERE.
We can also use the FIABs or the IABs, these are available to all teachers. You will hand score via the system called THHS.

These TWO alternatives will allow students to "experience" the rigor of CAASPP.

CAN'T TEACHERS CREATE THEIR OWN PROMPTS?

Yes of course, BUT why not use CAASPP released items? Then teachers can use the exemplars afterwards and the rubrics for scoring (the same rubric used for CAASPP).

Otherwise, teachers can create their own prompt but each grade level must agree and administration must be standardized.

SCORING PARTY, ANYONE?

District will provide support for a scoring party - two hours of time after school so grade level teams can score.

Although this PDF indicates Oregon, CA uses the same rubrics. Find the grade then the genre. Teach kids what their texts are being rated against by going through the rubric with them.
