DO: Be willing to collaborate

No one likes a team member who shoots down every idea yet isn't willing to contribute anything of their own. Have an open mind and consider the positives and negative of each idea presented. The best solutions arise when teams come together and feed off each other's ideas. Some criticism is good, but being negative all the time stifles a team's creativity.

DON'T: Take things personally

More often than not, when a team member has some form of criticism, it's usually meant as constructive so that your work will only be stronger. Yes there will be times when tensions are running high and your teammates may turn on each other (this usually happens when the deadline is near). Though it may be hard, let those comments slide. Don't get defensive and focus on producing the best work possible.

DO: Know when to step up and when to back down

Every team has a leader, and whether that person volunteers or is appointed, you need to know when to step up to the plate or let someone else take charge. Being a business student, I've been in and seen countless groups where everyone tries to be leader and it never works out. Not being the lead does not make you weak, it means that you recognize that letting someone else take charge is what's best for the group.

DON'T: Underestimate a team member

Whether you pick your team members or you are put into a group of people you are not familiar with, don't underestimate those you are working with. Everyone has different talents and capabilities which all have unique ways of surfacing. Just because someone does not have a lot of experience or expertise in a certain area does not mean that they cannot contribute great ideas.

DO: Check your ego at the door

When you have to work in a group, you need to think and act as one. There is no room for people who think they better than everyone else and are above menial tasks. The more you and your group members are committed to your goal and are willing to do whatever work needs to be done to excel, the more efficient and stronger overall you will be.
