It is paramount to use various different strategies and techniques to promote and encourage active participation in the classroom. For example, we must include activities that are link to our students’ interests, we must ensure tasks are purposeful, relevant and collaborative.

For example, in my math support group, I noticed students were interested in cards, as a result I researched for card games that helped with maths. Students enjoyed these activities and it helped students to revise certain math concepts.

As already happened other times , I agree with what Lidia and Antonino from Portugal say. I think that a relaxed atmosphere in the class between teachers and students can help a lot to achieve good results in personalising learning.Of course also personalised instructions and pacing in doing tasks and processing materials are definitely useful. I think that sometimes also flexible contents should be used . What I find also very inspiring and motivating for students is the possibility to choose the way, the tools, they can use to show their learning or to create useful materials for their mates (basing on their own experience). Of course students reflection on their learning is crucial because it can foster their ownership by reinforcing their self-esteem. I found also the idea of a Planning for Flexible Seating a great but challenging idea As I read in the six ways to personalize learning "Flexible seating is a popular strategy because it is a physical manifestation of targeted, fluid instruction. With a focus on student choice and comfort, flexible seating is a great way to convey to students"You matter".
However I think that sometime it is very difficult to realise personalised learning in Italy. The most difficult step is to allow real personalised pacing in learning. There are many difficulties if we do not change the traditional approach to curricula and final exams.

I’m trying to consider the possibilities in the environment I am and with the students I’ve. Unfortunately we don’t have so much technology, but I always had the idea to involve each child in their learning and growing. The ability to make a plan, for each child with him/her would be already a great step. The point I am still missing is how to do with so many kids all together, how to follow them properly and how to give to all of them what they need when they need. I am alone and often, since is a poor context, they ask me their attentions not because they need, but because they’re alone with no usual consideration from an adult.

I think teachers have to use different strategies for effective personalised learning. Among the 7 strategies I usually use co-planning learning and mastery-based assessment. I think working collaboratively, in pairs or peer learning is one of the ways to encourage students' learning. Here in Italy students follow the same curriculum. I am intrigued by the criterion called "giving students agency". I repeat over and over again to my teenage students that the classroom is sometimes used as a power roleplay. On the contrary we may work together for a common goal and they should use me as a personal assistant. I love the idea of personalising learning. It is something that I always tried to implement, but it can be hard. We have to fight against a system that hardly gives you the opportunity to shine through different teaching approaches. There's the national curriculum that you HAVE to go through, a lenghty list of things that students will never understand, unless we change your methods. Respecting students timming is important and giving them time to shine is crucial. Every single one of our kids can shine bright, wether they are slow or fast learners. In my opinion, personalised learning is the key for students' success. If they learn something related to their own interests, they will feel more engaged with their learning process and, most likely, tempted to go deeper in their learning.
However, there are some barriers to personalised learning, namely, the fact that classes have too many students, which doesn't allow teachers and students to interact the way it would be needed for teachers to know their students well enough to personalise their learning more. Besides that, the curriculum is often too strict to be adapted to students' interests and characteristics and some schools still lack the necessary technological conditions for teachers and students to "be connected".

In order to implement personalized learning in my classes, we should take into account different aspects. If that doesn’t happen, we won’t be successful.

It is crucial that classes are small so that we can diversify strategies and activities with all students. It is also important that schools are well equipped (furniture, tools, books, resources, encyclopaedias, topic magazines, computers, leisure games and internet, etc.

The students’ parent’s collaboration is also very important because they bring knowledge from home and take new knowledge back home.

Parents should have time to discuss with their children what they are learning at school and should enrich that experience.

We should also provide feedback constantly so that they understand how they are developing in their learning and reflective upon the ways they can improve. We shouldn’t underline their mistakes.

Teachers ought to have a close relationship with their students so that these will feel at ease to ask for help and clarify their doubts.

The syllabus should be flexible and adapted to their necessities. It should encounter inclusive values.

The topic units should be adequate to the different learning paces and the methodologies should vary and be motivating. If we allowed students to participate in choosing the topics, learning would be more engaging.

When we observe the primary school children, they are more adaptable to learn through hands on experience which develops their cognitive skills. Digital tools come as an application tool. There is a lot for these children to experience , like fieldtrips, use manipulative, draw, design an object, experiment etc. The more they connect with the real life examples better is their conceptualisation.

I am reflecting after listening to Mr. Jose Alberto’s webinar, where I found a class with lots of hands on activities and the tablets were just kept for support in case the child wishes to use it.

It was related to visiting students' parents at home. It was "We already spend so much time preparing classes, working at school and meeting parents at school that visiting parents at home (including commuting) would be excessive. Also, as Roberta said, not every culture would accept such visits. Frankly, I wouldn't want my children's teachers visiting me at home at all." I like Ana Coreia's comment about PBL. I think it’s very important that when assessment is made by the teacher, to be quick in giving the student feedback and discuss with him in what aspects there were mistakes, before he (the student) forgets what the assessment work was about. However when the teachers have three hours of classes per week and the group has 27 students it’s very difficult to put in practice this strategy. In fact, the biggest problem of these strategies is time, being able to follow up all students in their own diversity

These strategies part from the idea of non-formal teaching, but students reality may be different. If they have to pass a formal exam in the end of their studies we must have in mind this and prepare them also for this kind of assessment. So I would include as a strategy planning together with the students the necessary steps for them to feel at easy when the do the formal exam.

My pedagogical experience tells me that we can do an effective work of supporting the learning activity when classes are composed by 15 students, maximum 20. I work per groups, I mean we have five groups of students per room. This way, tasks are divided and thems too, providing diversity. Yet, to assess in real time and promote feedback moments, it gets a bit hard if the time we have is short, if it goes around 50 minutes.

Neverthless, I have been able to manage the feedback after class, online, and it goes well, because it aloows children to improve their work.

Different strategies, different software to search for information, to present, and assess (such as portfolio, peer assessment and to post or publish their works in Sapo Campus, Blogger or drive) have been a great help.

Personalized learning means being able to identify the student’s interests and learning needs, so that the contents to be studied and the choice of the most motivating strategies and final product presented by the student can be personally adapted.

First of all, students must feel that you care and want to help them get the skills they need to be successful. Besides this, we have to respect their pace of learning and find ways of engaging students in their own learning process and of incorporating self-reflection and co-planning learning. This means that they must be aware of the progress they are making, and know their strengths and skills, so they can identify the best ways they learn and of demonstrating what they have learned. Teachers’ immediate feed-back and talking to students and making them reflect how they could have done better is essential, so students’ instructional process can be promptly self-regulated and they can decide about the best way to improve.

Personalized learning requires the use of varied strategies to meet the different styles of learning, needs and interests of students. These strategies include every kind of activities you can implement from the typical worksheet to singing songs or the use of digital contents and tools, like, for instance, the use of Kahoot games and Socrative quizzes, the creation of blogs, etc. The use of portfolios could also be a good strategy, so that students can easily see their progress. Besides this, we have to respect students’ own pace and give them additional help and time to do remedial work.

Of course, that in my everyday practice as an English teacher, this would be easier if we could have smaller classes or if there was co-teaching, allowing multi-level classroom activities.

For a personalized learning, I think students should answer 4 “simple” questions:

What?

Questioning. What they want to know/do?

Why?

What problem they want to solve? Effective outcome (useful learning).

How? When?

How do they want to solve it (cooperation)? Program/tailor their learning process. What path do they prefer to take? What are their preferences (working way: more practice; more investigation;…). Using what kind of knowledge or ability (multiple intelligence; learning styles)? Personal working pace. Competence based and personalized assess.

Teachers should be, by knowing their students, a mere facilitator and a guide in the learning process.

Personalized learning is opposed to the traditional teaching system that was developed to think of mass education and has nothing to do with current students because it forces all students to learn through the same system without attending to individual needs and aspirations of each.
To become more effective, learning has to happen around individual learning profiles, allowing students to choose their path, pace, and way of learning, progressing at their own pace.

Personalized learning promotes a growth mentality that is tantamount to encouraging students' efforts.
This is about testing different strategies, searching for and using feedback, asking for help, and analyzing the reasons behind successes and failures.
By promoting personalized learning, I have tried everything to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each student. It is not about the fact that a child knows one or the other, or that he is smart or not; is about recognizing the unique talents and challenges of everyone. As a result, pupils come to see skills shortages and areas of weakness as something everyone has; they are normalized.
I also encourage each pupil to learn the way that works best for him, even if I come against the styles and situations that provoke my own fixist mentality. The key is to be open to experimentation, repetition and, most importantly, to your students' ideas.

I agree with the fact that personalized learning is important to encourage tudents become more indipendent and responsible students/ persons. The challenge is however the large number of pupils in the class and the time availbale. I work with students who consider education as obligatory, they study for getting scores and pass their test. I hand them their tests with no score otherwise they do not pay attention to the correction of mistakes. Moreover, I realize that a lot of students are not able to listen carefully, too many distractions!!! The colleagues ,on the other hand work individully, and this is not profitable for anyone, each of us teachers work a lot but do not communicate, collaborat, so lots of efforts and little results, When I encourage them to reflect on their learnng or to assess their learnng they feel it as waste time because they think that formativeassessment is only the teachers task,. In short , personalized learning requires: Collaboration among teachers and teachers students as well as family, it is also necessary to use a methodology which ahas to be integrated with digital tools in order to take into account students pace, to promote creativity and ownership!! But Alas how is ti possible to do so , if the connection is weak or does not exist at all? or even worse when students waste time to carry out a task? very difficult to find a solution to these questions .

There are many different criteria one can apply. I think first of all a teacher should learn about his/her students and switch between different teaching methods to appeal to all students. If one method doesn’t work, s/he can use the other. Taking different learners with different learning styles into account is also important. S/he can plan her lessons accordingly and appeal to everybody. Class environment is another important criteria. Students and the teachers should feel comfortable in the class.
