Avoid sarcasm: People who don't know you may not know you are being sarcastic as there is little to no inflection in text. "I couldn't be more excited." could be read in two different ways so make sure to let people know you are being sarcastic or sincere.

Acknowledge and respond to messages promptly: No one likes to be kept waiting, especially for a response to a question. Likewise, if you send an email it might be important to know the other party received it. If you are having a conversation with someone via email, keep your email open and check it every few minutes.

Don't spam and avoid junk mail: Don't contribute to worthless information on the internet by forwarding or responding to chain letters or rumors, etc. Ignore such messages promising wealth or avoiding a horrible fate.

Remember that your posts are public: They can be read by your friends, your family, your parents or, one day your boss. Even if you have your privacy settings on high, don't say or post anything that you wouldn't say or share in front of those people.

Avoid personal abuse: You can strongly disagree with something someone says, but don't call them names or threaten them with personal violence. Everyone has a right to their opinion but name calling is rude and threatening someone is against the law.

Examples adapted from:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1855
http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/guides/about-netiquette

I believe it is vital to teach our students the importance of netiquette because we live in a technology driven civilization. According to Pew Research Center (http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2016/09/07/some-americans-dont-use-the-internet-who-are-they/), only 13% of American in 2016 adults did not use the internet. If current trends continue this number will shrink in the coming years. Thus, I believe it is important to prepare the next generation for a life on the internet. The various rules and tips for online etiquette will help ensure safety and politeness of children online and I believe that a good foundation is crucial to success later in life. Just like parents, caregivers and, teachers all teach manners and how important they are in everyday life, so too should they teach manners when online.

“The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was enacted by Congress in 2000 to address concerns about children's access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet. CIPA imposes certain requirements on schools or libraries that receive discounts for Internet access or internal connections through the E-rate program – a program that makes certain communications services and products more affordable for eligible schools and libraries. In early 2001, the FCC issued rules implementing CIPA and provided updates to those rules in 2011.”

https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/childrens-internet-protection-act

Digital law can be defined as the legal rights and restrictions governing technology use.

Examples of digital law:
• Illegal File Sharing - The sharing of files between people using computers connected to the internet. The term covers both the uploading (making the file available) , for instance on a file sharing service such as the YouTube to MP3 Website, and the downloading of that file from the internet to a computer.
• Hacking - Unauthorized use of computer and network resources. While often dramatized, it can be as simple as overclocking your computer’s CPU or GPU.
• Creating Viruses - A software program capable of reproducing itself and usually capable of causing great harm to files or other programs on the same computer. There are so many viruses out there that it is impossible to name them all.

Examples adapted from:
http://digitalhawks.weebly.com/digital-law.html

I have learned a lot doing research for the digital law portion, mostly about CIPA. I believe I will be able to use this a lot in the future but especially when I am a principal and even as a superintendent. I think it is every teacher's responsibility to not only teach children about digital law but also protect them from any dangers technology may bring. I also think it's very important to model good behavior by obeying the digital law as well as any other laws.

For this lesson I would have my class work individually. They would pick an example of good or bad netiquette and write about how it has either affected them personally or someone close to them. Then they would write about what happened and then share with the class what they would have done differently or why they were correct.

For example: I picked avoiding sarcasm. Sometimes when messaging my friends online I can't tell if they are being sarcastic or not. Because I can't tell if they are being sarcastic or not I get embarrassed asking if they are serious or not. I don't want my friends to be embarrassed so I put "jk" after something sarcastic.

I would assign each of them one digital law and they would research and explain why the law is in place. After devoting time for research they would type up a short report and present it to the class.

For example: Doing a report telling why creating computer viruses are against the law. The students would explain that the main reason is that computer viruses cause damage and can steal personal data. A law against creating computer viruses should help reduce the number of viruses on the internet and protect people's personal property.

I really liked this assignment and I think I learned a lot doing it. I also think that this provided valuable experience using Padlet to organize and display information. I think that the information gathered here will help me in the future because now I understand some of the intricacies of netiquette and digital law. Another important lesson I learned from this assignment was that CIPA existed, what it was for and, who uses it. This definitely has a lot of future application. My only regret is that while doing research for the lesson plans I couldn't find any NYS CCLS (New York State Common Core Learning Standard) that applied. While there were some vaguely related, they were geared towards specific projects. While I'm glad they are implementing learning and using technology in classrooms, I'm disappointed that there wasn't more freedom given to teachers. Thankfully though, this project allowed us a great deal of creativity while also teaching us about important topics that will carry on for years to come.
