The Little Rock Nine was a group of African American students who attended an all white school in 1957, despite the segregation and racism at the time. They faced many struggles during their protest, but they were supported with the help of the US Army.

"I was in the middle of something I didn't expect, but I knew it wasn't a time to back down". - Ernest Green

I chose this quote because even though it's short, I believe that it's a very strong and powerful quote. It shows the fact that the kids still faced many unknown things during their experience. It also shows that even though they faced many struggles, they were still willing to fight for equality and what they believed in, not backing down on what they came there to do.

"My choice to join this group of nine was an act of bearing witness to the sacrifices of all those who have spilled their blood in the ongoing fight for equal rights in this country"

- Melba Pattillo Beals

I chose this quote because it shows the bravery and motivation these students had. It shows that the students didn't just come to fight for no reason, it shows that they want to fight for all the people who were before them, and all the people that will come after. The students want to make change for themselves and all the others who have fought for equality.

Question 1: What do you think happened to these African American students as a result of this movement?

I think these students were definitely met with anger and racism because the movement they were protesting was a very big deal at the time. Coming into an all white school as an African American was a thing you couldn't do back then, so the fact that they did this probably made a huge impact on their community, but I bet it also faced lots of discrimination as well.

Question 2: What would you do in these students' positions? Would you stand for change?

If I was in these students positions, I don't think I would be brave enough to do what they did. The courage it took for them to step out of their comfort zones and into a community that didn't accept them or view them as equals, was huge. I definitely would've wanted to fight and stand up for change, but I would not have been able to accomplish what these students did.

Tenets Of Democracy

The two tenets of democracy that I think are represented by this event are equality and rights. The tenet of equality is portrayed during this event because these students were fighting for equality between races. The whole point of their protest was to bridge that gap between white and black people at the time. The students fought and protested to be able to go to an all-white school. They fought for their rights and the right to be able to stand side by side with students of different races. That's why I believe that the tenet of rights is also portrayed by this event.

The reason I chose this video is because it goes into detail about the events that took place during this protest. It also explains a lot about how this event impacted the Civil Rights Movement and why it was such a big deal for its time.
