Text A is a webpage from the NHS.uk website. It is aimed at young people/adults who are suffering with a sore throat, or parents who have children that have a sore throat. The primary purpose of the text is to inform about home remedies that will help, and to also offer advise on how to 'soothe' a sore throat. The secondary purpose is to reassure people that sore throats are a common illness, and prevent them from coming in to GP surgeries when it is not necessary.

Sentence Forms - Ben

Text A uses a variety of sentence forms throughout, with one of the more noticeable forms being simple sentences. The main body of this text is taken up by instructions that are written in bullet point form, in order to get information across to the reader as effectively and efficiently as possible. For example, the imperative sentences 'eat cool or soft foods' and 'avoid smoking or smoky places', help to convey a clear message without the reader having to read through a large section of text to locate the information they need. However, there is the inclusion of other sentences forms used within the text, with an example being the complex sentence 'GPs don't usually prescribe antibiotics for sore throats because they won't relive your symptoms or speed up recovery'. The inclusion of this sentence form helps the text to appear as being more formal, which helps to sustain a professional image. This is important for websites that are giving advice, due to people potentially not trusting the site if it looks untrustworthy.

As all information here is required to be universally available to everyone, the language therefore used must be as basic as possible. The phonological discourse however is particularly interesting as it must also be available to younger adults and children. In the title alone the word “better” is used, this is an example of a glottal stop, simple language mainly used my children, showing the website is accessible to those who are younger. An example of phonology found within the text would the rule of three, “ice cubes, ice lollies or hard sweets.” The author repeats the the term ice, an example of consonance as the “ice” sound is repeated. In phonetics, this sound would be referred to as a fricative. Fricative consonants are of a higher pitch than others, made by directing stream of air from the tongue towards the teeth.

We also see use of alliteration with the phrase “bad breath”, this is done through repeating the plosive consonant “b”, made by blocking air from the lungs with the mouth, then releasing with force. Further on in the text, we see an example of onomatopoeia, with the word “wheezy” being used to describe a potential reader’s voice change. This is done in order to help the potential patient audibly identify the symptom. This is important as once again; the readers first language may not be English and such information is vital to be accessible to all.

The subtitles in the text are bold, this makes it easier for the text receiver to navigate to which section they are interested it, the font is very simple and easy to read, this supports the purpose of the text which is to inform the reader, the text isn’t trying to appear as attractive, the black and white colour scheme also supports this.

The text producer uses field specific lexis to help the text producer achieve their purpose of informing the audience of what to do and how to treat a sore throat at home. The use of the specific field lexis such as the dynamic verb 'swallowing' and 'breathing' in the simple sentence 'you have difficulty swallowing and breathing,' the field specific language helps sooth the audience and reassure them that they know what they're doing. As well as that, it achieves the main purpose of preventing people from seeking medical attention, such as a GP, for 'common' illnesses despite having 'difficulty swallowing.

The text constantly uses the repetition of the descriptive adjective ‘sore’. One example of this is in the simple sentence ‘you often get sore throats. The text producer uses the repetition of the descriptive adjective ‘sore’ to establish the pain and grief the text reviver may be in. Opposingly, the use of the action verb ‘relieve’ also has a positive to the article, so the text receiver has hope to get the cause of pain to become less server or serious. The text producer uses descriptive adjectives to help the text receiver connect with the article, to understand their problem and resolve the issue themselves. As the article of from the NHS, the text receiver will see the source as valuable and trustworthy as well as having a simple and directly pointed target audience. By the use of the descriptive adjectives, the text receiver can see that the symptoms they are feeling are common for a sore throat.
