Readers, Writers, Texts
1. Why and how do we study literature? Why do we study TTTC?

Literature is a way for people to express their emotions towards the world around them. This is important towards helping us be more well-rounded people with the capacity to understand. TTTC is a chilling account of war and what it does to people. By studying the book, we gain a greater understanding of the emotions the author felt writing it, and thus a greater understanding of humanity as a whole.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? How are we impacted by TTTC?
One gains a greater understanding of humanity as a whole. Through stories, we can convey and express our feelings. This allows people to feel a wide range of emotions. TTTC impacts people by making them think about the impacts of war on the people that fight it. We gain a greater understanding on what a soldier thinks.

3. In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?
In TTTC, meaning is expressed through multiple short stories told by an unreliable narrator. O'Brien reiterates multiple times that a true war story is not necessarily true, but that it manages to convey feelings felt at that time. O'Brien contradicts truth with fallacies to make us feel the same way he did.

4. How does the structure of style of TTTC affect its meaning?
TTTC is told in multiple short stories. A linear story would restrict O'Brien because he'd have to have a moral and a plot, with conflict, beginning, middle, and end, etc. O'Brien doesn't wish to give a moral or a memoir, because that misses what he's trying to get across through each story, that a true story has to stick to absolute truth. His experiences can't be generalized to a 200 page narrative told beginning to end. The short stories each reveal something essential about his time in Vietnam.

Intertextuality
How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
What makes a text a "classic" is it's influence over the world at that specific time period and over it's genre as a whole. As a society, we delegate what texts become "classic" and which do not. However, a "classic" does not have to be a traditional novel or period piece. Persepolis still stands as a literary work because it is has an overarching theme and motifs throughout the novel.
Time and Space
What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?
I got the impression of fear throughout the novel. I saw how the regime worked on the basis of fear, people's fear of what would happen to them if they disobeyed. It also gave me insight into how Iran treats women, for example, they are required to wear veils and cover their heads. For me, I can't compute why that should be required, but it happened. I saw the Iranian regime as restrictive of personal expression.

Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
The best connection was between TTTC and Persepolis, because both novels explore war and how it affects society. Particularly, how war is self-destructive. I also noticed a connection between Hughes and Satrapi, notably, how they both view their nations in an ideal light, despite those nations not living up to their ideals.
How does Persepolis connect to our world today?
The Iranian regime in the novel still exists today and the Middle East as a whole remains a region devastated by war, insurgents, ethnic and religious conflict, and foreign intervention. The struggle for freedom that Satrapi mentions in the beginning still remains relevant for these people today.

Consider what we've learned about with machismo, marianismo, honor and the impact of colonialism.

Chronicle demonstrates the importance of family and honor in Columbian culture through the main plot point, the murder of Santiago Nasar. The murder of Nasar shows how important one's family is. They thought that Nasar had ruined their sister's life, so they killed him with little to no evidence in the most brutal fashion possible. It also demonstrates the extreme gender roles that men and women are assigned to in society. Women are not free to choose their husband, they must be virgins or else they will be cast away from society. Women are supposed to embody the Virgin Mary. The same expectation is not extended to men.

Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
Chronicle connects to other works through it's focus on gender roles. This is clearly connected with the characters of Sethe and Paul D in Beloved, who both still stick to these gender roles. Chronicle's focus on machismo also provides a clear connection with The Things They Carried and it's focus on the men who fought in Vietnam. In Vietnam, the men have to shield their true feelings in order to survive.
How does Chronicle connect to our world today?
Chronicle connects to our world because it's a reflection of "traditional" society in Latin America. Different roles are delegated to men and women, because they feel society must work that way.

Time and Space

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text? Cultural and historical context is critical in understanding a work for the reader. By putting the work in the historical context it was written in, we are able to understand the times in which the author lived and how he felt about what he was talking about. For the author, literature is often a reflection of how they feel about the world around them. Taking this into account, there is no way we can expect to fully understand the work without understanding the context.

How do we approach literary texts from different times and cultures to our own? We approach literary texts through the lens with which we see through today. We judge the characters and setting by our own morality and values, which change over time. We may not agree with the actions or the characters, but we try our best to understand what is being said and the implications it MAY have on today. For different cultures, we also interpret these works through the lens of our own culture. Different cultures have differing views on how society works. As an American, I believe in a certain set of values. However, a Nigerian has a different set of values to mine. Taking this into account, we have to try and mitigate the cultural divide in order to understand the point of view of the author.

How does the meaning and impact of a literary text change over time? I don't think the meaning of the text can ever truly change. When the author sat down and wrote his work, he had a deliberate point he wished to get across. To me, that is the meaning of the text. However, the impact of the text, how we view it and interpret it, definitely changes. As the text becomes older, it allows us to analyze it in a different way. New perspectives can completely change the meaning of a text.

Consider how Morrison's stream-of-consciousness, shifting points of view, and use of analepsis and prolepsis impact the meaning of the novel.

Structure and style affects meaning by adding suspense and irony to the story, as well as emphasizing key aspects of the text and adding expression to the work. Through Morrison's structure of the story, readers slowly uncover the story of Sethe and her children. We also gain information of her past through flashbacks, which play a key role in the present. Past, present, and future also serve a symbolic role in the story. Flashbacks to the past also provide the opportunity for motifs to appear, such as the bird or the tree.
Time and Space

How important is cultural or historical context to the production and reception of a literary text?

How does Beloved connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
Beloved connects to other works in it's focus on trauma and inequality. The Things They Carried is a novel that attempts to rationalize men's experiences in the Vietnam War. It is not a novel that attempts to justify the war. War has given the men unimaginable trauma in their civilian lives, just as slavery has given Sethe, Paul D, and Baby Suggs trauma in their lives as well. Beloved also focuses on inequality. Morrison highlights how slavery destroys the identity of the slaves and robs them of their free will, all at the hands of the white slaveowner. Langston Hughes focused heavily on these themes in his poems.
How does Beloved connect to our world today?
Beloved connects to the world today because it makes us question our moral beliefs, values, and principles that are usually in conflict with one another. Readers are faced with the morality of Sethe's murder of her child. The murder of her child conflicts with our disdain for slavery. We cannot say definitively what the right course of action is, because both have horrendous outcomes. Many decisions we make, individually or collectively, are morally grey.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)?

Beloved has a third-person omniscient narrator. This allows the thoughts and feelings of each character to be displayed. This gives a "voice" to each of the characters in 124. A notable example of how Beloved approaches gender is in the characters Paul D and Denver. Paul D, as a man, questions his masculinity and strength throughout the novel. Denver is a character that transforms from a timid child to a grown adult that supports her family.

What were some global issues you explored in Auschwitz and After? Consider the Hexagonal Harkness we had and some of the global issues you came up with during that discussion.
We discussed global issues relating to inhumanity and how it is allowed to happen. Another interesting global issue was how community can help one through traumatic experiences. Extending that further, trauma also played a large role in the book, and how it affects the person was a global issue we discussed.

How does Auschwitz connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
This book connects with others in it's focus on trauma and the inhumanity of being enslaved. For example, in Beloved, many of the characters feel the trauma of slavery, especially Sethe and Paul D. The inhumanity associated with slavery is a clear connection to the Holocaust and the discrimination against Jews in general.
How does Auschwitz connect to our world today?
Discrimination still exists all over the world, even in the United States, though some of us won't admit it. What Delbo shows (within the context of WW2 and the Holocaust) is that discrimination leads to hate, and hate leads to what is described in the book. Killing children, burning millions of bodies, stealing their belonging, etc. It's sickening, and it's not like it never happens anymore. Rwanda, Sri Lanka, the Balkans, etc. Even the Armenian genocide is yet to be recognized by most countries. This book connects to our world because it reflects discrimination and what it can do to people. Even though Delbo was not Jewish, she still felt the effects of the Nazi's hate for the Jews.
