If I'm going to be completely honest, I don't remember my teachers reading to me. The first teacher that read a book to me was my 4th grade teacher. Mrs. Ponce read my class "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory" and I loved it.
My mom also instilled a love for reading because she would study the bible with me at a very young age. I have very fond memories from so many bible stories that have impacted my life throughout the years.

Ms. R. Farias, my 8th grade Language Arts teacher, was amazing. That was the year I discovered that I was intrigued by Greek Mythology. We read so many stories about gods, godesses, and nymphs. She encouraged us to research using the library resources. This was the year that made me realize just how much I enjoyed reading.

Mrs. Jennings, my 11th grade English teacher, would assign novels instead of using the traditional textbook. At the time I didn't realize it but she was following the curriculum using novels. This was the year I discovered how fascinating classics were to me. One of the books we read was "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte. There were so many mixed feelings as I read this novel. The classroom discussions allowed my classmates and me to express our points of view on various topics that were introduced through this reading. This same teacher introduced me to Jane Austin, which is still one of my personal favorites today.

Once I became a teacher, I made it my mission to instill a love for reading in my students. I wanted them to savor a variety of genres. One of the first books I read with my students was "Esperanza Rising" by Pam Munoz Ryan. My students knew they had to get all of their work done before I would read with them. Novel Reading was used as reward and they looked forward to it. I loved leaving them on a cliff hanger because it left them wanting more. This type of reading allowed me to bring in other reading topics such as: cultures, harvesting, and traveling to different parts of the world.

Unfortunately, once I graduated from high school I would only read all the required material for my university classes. Then I started teaching and I was consumed by professional reading. One day a fellow teacher asked me what I liked to read for myself, and I didn't have an answer. It was then that she offered to lend me book she thought I would love. The book was "Confessions of Shopaholic" by Sophie Kinsella. I read every single book by that author that year. This became my nighttime routine. To this day, I give myself 10-15 minutes a night to read something just for me.
