Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr by Doreen Rappaport is a biography of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that highlights his role as a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. Through pieces of Dr. King's speech and vivid illustrations, the book explores his message of peace, equality, and justice. I chose this book because it helps explain the fight that activist went through trying to obtain peace and equality. It is important for students to understand that it takes strong people to be the face of change.

The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson is a picture book that explores segregation as well as an evolving friendship. It tells the story of two young girls, one black and one white, who are separated by a fence that divides their neighborhoods. Despite the barrier, they develop a connection and learn to overcome prejudice and fear. I chose this book because it conveys the importance of unity, courage, and hope during the Civil Rights Movement. It is important that students get to see what it was like for kids their age, not just adults.

I can recall the lesson that was taught to me when I was in elementary school. So I wanted to do the topic justice. I believe that incorporating all injustices for indigenous people should be consistent and accurate.
