Clay and Webster were advocates if the North, and were for the Compromise of 1850. Clay delivered more that 70 speeches as a powerful acceptance. Webster was also passionately hated for voting on the Compromise. Calhoun also wanted the Compromise, and if they did not agree on something in the South, then they should think about separating as a nation.

The Free Soil Party was an anti-slavery party that opposed the extension of slavery in the 1848 and 1852 elections, because they believed it would limit laborers in the newly acquired land. Popular sovereignty was liked by politicians because they were at a compromise with the Free Soil Party with the ban of slavery in the Western land.
