I chose a photo of poppies to describe the tone because poppies are used as a symbol of remembrance day. The text mainly focuses on the authors life as a secret agent the tragic heartbreak she faced. In the text the feeling of remembrance is shown in paragraph 36-37 where the author states "On the eve of my nineteenth birthday, I fell madly, hopelessly in love with an agent. He was one of our best agents. A crack. He’d just returned from a very successful second mission, and he was adulated. He was a legend in the section. I’d heard all about him, but I never thought I’d meet him.Then, suddenly one evening, he was there. Our eyes locked across a crowded room. And it was as if a magnet drew us irresistibly towards each other.". The way the author talks about him from her memory and so vividly lets the readers know how much she thinks about her love and reminisces on their past moments together.

This photo of a secret agent is used to describe the many details and imagery she creates about the life of secret agents.The author creates imagery in the text by detailing the many risks that come with being a secret agent and telling very vivid stories of how she became in agent. She creates imagery on the risks of being a secret agent in paragraph 8-9 where she states "I got to know an awful lot of agents. And I shared many confidences with those who were about to leave. They told me of their concerns for their families—many of them were married with young children—and of their own apprehension of torture and of death.

They knew they only had a 50 percent chance of coming back. And they were afraid." and in paragraph 5 "He sent me to a large building in central London. Oh, I knew it well. But like the hordes of people who passed by every day, never had I imagined or even suspected that this was the headquarters of Churchill’s secret army. And that behind those walls, members of every occupied country were organizing acts of sabotage, and the infiltration of secret agents into enemy territory at night, by parachute, fishing boat, felucca, and submarine.". She creates vivid imagery on her initiation into the secret agency.

Theme

This photo represents the theme of the story, of sacrificing love for the greater good. When we were first introduced to the authors secret lover we are told that he was one of the top agents. Leading up to this moment the authors is detailing the hardships agents go through thus hinting to us that her lover's job is extremely dangerous. Then we learn that her lover has to go to an extremely mission and that he might not come back. The author further adds to this theme by stating "They told me I should be proud. He was incredibly courageous—a wonderful man, who realized that there was a force of evil in the world that had to be annihilated, but that freedom has a price tag. He paid that price with his life.". She had to put her own wants aside and she did not beg him to stay because she knew that the mission would contribute the the cause.

Conflict

I chose this photo to represent the conflict in this story because in the photo the couple is in the dark and reaching out to the heart. Them being in the dark shows that they need too keep their love a secret and had to sneak around to see each other. The fact they they chose to stay together knowing that they both have high risk jobs is shown through the light beaming behind the heart to show the joy they get from being with each other. This can be shown in paragraph 42-43 where the author states "We kept emotion out of our conversation. I think we were both afraid of breaking down. I know if we hadn’t, I would have broken down, and I’d have begged him not to go.

I imagine you’ve all been in love. Can you picture what it’s like to be terribly in love, and know that all you have is a few hours, this moment in time?". This showing that they were too scared to show their love for each other in this moment as they are unsure of what could come next.

Implicit v.s. Explicit Language

I chose this crystal ball to represent Noreen's use of Implicit and Explicit language as the author uses a lot implicit and explicit language to foreshadow this in the story. Noreen first used implicit language to help foreshadow the death of her lover, Bill. All the way up until paragraph 36 where she finally introduces her lover the author talks about the many dangers there is in the life of a secret agent. And even talks about the agent she hung out with the night before his departure and he gives her a chain to keep as he knew he would not be returning from his mission and at least wanted someone to remember who he was. Then Noreen says this is paragraph 38-39 "He was a hero...Our idyll lasted three months, until he left on his next mission." . Given all the information she said about the dangers of being an agent this leads the readers to believe that the relationship was so short due to him getting injured or dying. The author uses explicit language when she wants to build up to what she and both the reader know is about to happen. She does this in paragraph 43 where she changes POV and directly talks to the viewers and is trying to share her distress to the readers and she and now the readers definitely know that Bill might not make it back from his mission.

Relationships

I chose this photo to represent Noreen relationship with her lover Bill. This connects to the text in the way that the author is trying to hold on to Bill for as long as she can because he has to go on a very dangerous mission. In the text Noreen states "We kept emotion out of our conversation. I think we were both afraid of breaking down. I know if we hadn’t, I would have broken down, and I’d have begged him not to go.". This paragraph shows how the author chose not to show her true emotions towards him because she knew she would prevent him from doing the right thing. This also connects to another excerpt from paragraph 41 that states "The day he left, we had lunch, just the two of us, in a little intimate restaurant.". Again the author says "intimate" to try and show us how much tension there was at the meeting because they were trying to keep the meeting professional.

Point of View

I chose this photo to present the point of view because Noreen tells the story as if she was talking to one of her friends,giving us very specific and personal details.The author first talks to us in first language to her story. The author shows this in paragraph 5 where she says "He sent me to a large building in central London. Oh, I knew it well. But like the hordes of people who passed by every day, never had I imagined or even suspected that this was the headquarters of Churchill’s secret army. Giving us a very detailed picture of her point of view and her thoughts and feelings in that moment. Then as the story progresses she starts to get more personal as she speaks on her secret relationship with her partner. And in paragraphs 42-43 she states "I know if we hadn’t, I would have broken down, and I’d have begged him not to go.

I imagine you’ve all been in love. Can you picture what it’s like to be terribly in love, and know that all you have is a few hours, this moment in time?". She changes the point of view to 2nd person where she is now directly speaking to her readers. This creates a very emotional point in the story where it makes you want to reach out to the author almost as if she if your friend. Which connects to the photo I chose, of the friends talking, showing how personal she is making the story.

The excerpt from the text where the author talks about her opinions on Diane Ackermans A Natural History of Love helps support her thesis statement as the author says that not once does Diane give a clear meaning on what love is. This adds onto her thesis statement as bell claims because there is no universal meaning of love that is why it is so difficult to love. Because Diane never gives a clear statement as to what love is it leaves the readers who are trying to better understand love with an even more confused and cloudy view of what love actually is. This is helping to prove the authors point on how this unclear definition of love is why so many people find it so difficult to love.

The authors tone towards the text is passionate. You can tell by how the author insists on how there is no universal definition of love that is why it seems so confusing which is why it is so important to the author that we have a universal definition of love. Another detail that supports the tone of this text is how the author criticizes Diane Ackermans A Natural History of Love as in the book not once does Diane provide a clear definition of just exactly what love is. Another excerpt from the text that shows me how passionate the author is about her work is in paragraph 3 where she states " I spent years searching for a meaningful definition of the word "love", and I was deeply relieved when i found one in psychiatrist M. Scott Peck's...". The fact that she was comforted by the fact that she could even find a meaningful definition of love shows just how much passion she feels towards the meaning of love.

The author mentions that as babies we respond to affection by giving affection to our care takers. She later goes on to add that Affection is just one of the ingredients to love. This adds onto her thesis statement to show how having a universal understanding to love makes the act of loving so difficult. As babies we are all essentially the same as we have no way of communicating so we all showed our affection the same way further eluding to how these babies essentially have a universal way of showing love and how it is so effective as when a baby shows such affection it is not questioned on whether or not they love you. It is only when we grow older that we learn these distorted definitions of "love" that make the act of loving so difficult and confusing.

A theme for the text would be that love can overpower hate. In the Prologue it states "A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life,

Whose misadventured piteous overthrows

Doth with their death bury their parents’ strife.

The fearful passage of their death-marked love,".

This supports the theme as it tells me how they took their lives to prove to their parents that their love was strong than their parents hate for each other in hopes that in the end their death could bring the two families together.

The first character that supports my theme is Romeo. From the first sight of Juliet he is instantly attracted to her and immediately tries to pursue her even though she was already dancing with Count Paris. This proves my theme showing his overpowering love for her regardless of what family she might be from as he doesn't know what family she belongs to. The second character who supports my theme is Count Paris. At the start of the party Count Paris immediately jumps at the chance to dance with Juliet. But once Romeo and Juliet had already set eyes on each other showing a deep attraction for each other over just seconds of eye contact. This enables Romeo to just be able to regard Count Paris and sweep Juliet away and into his arms. Regardless of Count Paris's immediate hostility Romeo could only focus on his deep attraction to Juliet overpowering Count Paris to be able to dance with Juliet.

In Romeo and Juliet it addresses loss through the death of the two main characters. In the prologue of the story we are already told that the price of their parents hatred for each other was the death of their children who killed themselves together as an act of love. The story is using loss as a "punishment" towards acts of hatred rather than loss. Romeo and Juliet's parents'hatred for each other only allowed their children's love for each other to fester. In All About Love the author addresses loss as a taboo towards love. Towards the end the text bell hooks explains how love and abuse cannot co-exist and that we are too afraid to accept a definition of love where we would no longer be able to see love present in our own families and relationships. This addresses the loss of our perception of love. When we lose our perception of love we see that the abuse we tolerate that is masked as love is truly not what it seems. But we are too afraid of losing what we relied on and believed in for so long that we stay in these abusive relationships and when or if we leave our perception of love is now significantly altered and we find it difficult to accept what love should actually be like. In the Price of Freedom the author approaches loss as a sacrifice. Towards the end of the story Noreens speaks about how she couldn't bring herself to mention their relationship the last time she met with Bill as she was afraid she would let her emotions get the best of her and that if she did she would have begged him not to go. She knew he wouldn't return but deep down she wanted to convince herself that he would come back. In the end she accepts his death and acknowledges that if he hadn't gone on the mission like she wanted they might not have been able to complete to mission leading to more death and acknowledges that he was a hero.

The tone of Romeo and Juliet is very optimistic towards love and allows the reader to believe that love can overcome hatred. Given how the main characters used their death to prove to their parents how strong their love is. The tone in all about love is nurturing which allows the readers to fully understand what love truly is. She creates a clear separation between abuse and love and how they cannot co-exist and shows us through her writing just how important our meaning of love is to our own ability to love. This inspires the reader to show personal growth so that they will be able to show love effectively. In the Price of Freedom her tone towards love is passionate. She talks about the moments between her and her late love which showed her what it was to truly be able to love and that sometimes we need to put our own selfishness behind for the greater good.

In Romeo and Juliet when they first meet they are instantly attracted to each other so attracted that Romeo forgets about his crush and takes over Juliet's dance with her potential suitor. Later on the become so deeply inlove with each otehr that they kill themselves in the end to prove their love to their parents. This is mirrored in "All About Love' where the author decribes love as something that needs to be nurtured and that love cannot be determined based on sexual-attraction
