Sam is a fifteen-year-old boy who never considered himself to be very bright. But lately, things had been going fairly well for him. He was learning new tricks on his skateboard, one of his teachers talked to him about college, and most of all, he met a girl named Alicia who became his romantic partner. It took years of waiting for things to be going this well, and about five seconds to mess it all up. If you're wondering what happened during those five seconds, he accidently got Alicia pregnant.
When Sam started skateboarding, his mother bought him a poster of Tony Hawk. And shortly thereafter, Tony Hawk's book. Sam read the book many times and got into the habit of talking to the poster pretending he was talking to Tony Hawk. He would ask a question and then use a quote from the book to imagine what Tony Hawk would say to him. This is how he manages to pull through despite how much his life changed.

I like how in the book, throughout the whole experience Sam has different perceptions on time. For example, he spends many years worrying about what will happen in the future. And then when the future happens, he changes to just letting it happen and not worrying so much about it. However I think the author goes way into detail with most things in the book and the book is a lot longer than it needed to be.
I think the book as a whole was a reminder that if you waste your life worrying about the future, your future won't be all that great. Instead you should focus on making the future as good as you can so you don't have to worry about it so much.

1. "Where would you say I lost three points?" (Page 216) In this part of the book, Sam asks his mother to rate how he is doing with marks out of 10, and she gives him seven. Sam asks where he lost three points because he wants to know how he can do better.
2. "If you stick to the facts, the whole point of a story has disappeared." (Page 219)
I picked this quote because it's a good tip when it comes to writing a novel. If you're trying to tell an intriguing story, you don't want to just go over what happened. You want to help the reader understand the characters, and the emotion they're feeling. Because if you just give the facts, someone could read another person's summary of the book and it wouldn't be any less interesting.
3. "If you're asking me to give my life marks out of ten, I'm afraid I couldn't go any higher than a three. This isn't what I had in mind." (Page 304.)
Looking back on when Sam asked his mother for marks out of ten, Sam rates himself this time. As far as responsibilities he gives himself an 8 out of 10. But as far as happiness he couldn't go very high, this wasn't the life he had in mind.

I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys reading teenage drama books. There is a lot of anticipation in the book. However, if you're a reluctant reader or you don't like long books, I wouldn't recommend it.

This song is about when you love someone so much that it becomes unhealthy and both of you are relying on each other as a crutch. This theme is characterized in the beginning of the book when Sam first starts dating Alicia. They spent every afternoon together, and when Sam's mother separated them for a night to take Sam to a movie, it almost destroyed both of them
