Is the learning environment engaging for students?

Mrs. Colliers classroom is a very engaging environment for students to learn. Students are divided up into "houses" (Amicus, Quantum, Animo, Fidelitas) where they have the opportunity to problem solve and answer questions daily within their groups to earn house points. This is engaging because groups are chosen to answer questions by a spinner (picture below). This makes all the students and groups prepared to answer questions because they never know which group is going to get called on to answer the question. This can also be used as motivation for good behavior, if students make good choices and have good behavior, then their house gets house points as well. And vise versa. Ms. Collier also uses anchor charts on a regular basis. She has bulletin boards for each subject area, where she hangs the most recent anchor charts and refers to them often. This is helpful because while she is teaching new material, she can reference or encourage her students to look around the class and use their resources.

Mrs. Collier does an awesome job modeling what she expects of the students. For this lesson specifically, she explained and modeled all aspects of this assignment before they had to complete it on their own on the smart board. She explained TIDE and reminded them to use the character analysis anchor charts they made prior to the lesson. She also did a good job providing students with positive feedback and building their confidence by doing "turn and talk" before told to answer or work independently. She also noticed prior to the observation that her students needed a mini lesson on common and proper nouns before they completed their papers on Wonder. Because they are writing an informational text and using evidence from the text, it was important for them to know that difference between proper and common nouns.

Prior to my observation, students talked about the theme of Wonder (choosing kindness) and how to use text evidence to write informational text. Mrs. Collier modeled a character analysis activity on Miranda. Then students worked in groups on character analysis from the book (August, Summer, Jack, Julian, Amos, Mr. Tushman) with focus on the theme choosing kindness. Students recorded in their reading journals a TIDE organizer. During my observation, Mrs. Collier went over the goals for the day, taught a mini lesson on common and proper nouns, reviewed the theme and TIDE, and dissected a writing about Miranda. Mrs. Collier had students do this because it shows them an example of what TIDE writing should look like by showing them examples of each part of it. Students then had independent work time where they completed their essays

Mrs. Collier uses flip charts as references all around her classroom and refers to them often. Three specific flip charts she referenced for this lesson were TIDE, RACE, and Elaboration Stems. Prior to writing their informational texts about Wonder, Ms. Collier has students in groups where they analyze a character so that each character has an anchor chart as well. Ms. Collier has students complete a pre-write for their informational text, where they find evidence before they begin writing. This gives students a guideline for organizing their thoughts, which overall makes their writing easier. And students get to refer to their peers work (character analysis anchor charts) and Wonder to find evidence. Before students start writing their papers, she explains to them the format in which they should be written (TIDE). This is posted on the board while students work independent on their writing about Wonder.
