I inform students of the college policy of 'no mobile use in class'. To make it seem less draconian, I have a 'frenemies or learning tools' policy. The students pick up on the bad connotations of frenemies and can't produce arguments for having them. The word itself highlights bad choices but focuses on the item being bad and not the student - it encourages them to make good decisions. I am consistent using this term, and eventually it changes their mindsets towards mobile usage.
