Jungah got a three-nine offsuit. 

There were few hands worse than that.

She had never known her parents. If they were alive they had willingly abandoned her, leaving her in the care of an orphanage in Daegu. It was a quiet enough beginning with few of the overseers ever really heeding the youngster in the rabble that was their current occupants. After having attracted the wrong kind of attention by being quiet and orderly Jungah ended up in a bare knuckle brawl with a bully. Her first few punches. 

Only one landed. 

She took several in return. 

No one was surprised a hand like that provided nothing at the flop.

For a bit. 

Even a bad hand can get a chance at the turn.

She fared long enough to have gotten settled in and gathered a small group of friends at the local school. Things were finally starting to look up for the young kid. Had only the beating in Daegu made her afraid of confrontation she might have been allowed to stay in Ulsan. Had she only thought to drag her friend away instead of fighting the bully that attacked him she would have stayed life-long friends with those kids. But the violence was setting a president. Her second fight in two separate orphanages. She was clearly the problem. 

So off she went again, this time to Changwon. Not far, but far enough that she could no longer visit her friends. When she had finally managed to settle down they uprooted her and tossed her aside, deeming her as big a problem as those she had rebelled against. At least in Changwon she would be part of the foster system. No more orphanages. No more needing to fight the bullies and the bigger kids. 

But when you’re young and angry it is hard to be liked. It is hard not to lash out when you’ve never experienced comfort.

And though one would hope a home that fostered kids would be an open loving place, one cannot look beyond the fact that a parent will punish a misbehaving child.

So come the river…

Fold. 

From the onset she had been a troubled kid. And though she tried not to she found herself digging her little pit deeper and deeper. Love seemed so out of reach that there was little hope in trying. So when she finally turned eighteen she was shown the door. There was no grace to be found; no safety net or help. It was her, the streets and whatever odd-job she could find. It did not pay much. And whatever little she could gather together was gambled to get ahead. She might not have played fair, but her excuses was always the same:

“It’s a dog eat dog world.”

Whatever words could not solve could be solved with fists. Never got too good at fighting though. 

But the booze helped stave off the pain. 

It became a vicious circle for a couple of years.

That was until she won the one thing that would turn her world around. A man had wagered his guitar on what he believed was a winning hand. Too bad a flush does not beat a full house. 

Bad for him that was. Jungah walked away from that table happy, ready to pawn off the guitar for a bit of cash and a comfortable stay at whatever nearby hostel she could find. She happily hummed as she plucked away at the strings, finding a certain calm as she walked. And with each step and strum she found her worries lifting a bit at a time, no matter how bad she was at playing. 

Perhaps this would be her ace.

And with the skills taught to her from her passing friends she began busking. Covers and self-written garbage that would earn her just enough for another night at the hostel. And if there would be a night she would come back with less than the cost of the room she would just smile and apologize as the owner took pity on her, finding that her pleasant demeanour sometimes was all it took to get by to the next day.

It became rare to see the young Jungah without a bright smile, even when things were rough. Even in the bottom of a bottle she would grin and sing and dance, finding some comfort in brightening the mood around her. And just like those around her it got her through. Day by day she would fight that same struggle to keep the smile up. To let it fall would mean letting down herself and everyone around her. If it so took all she had she would fight those worries and struggles from her past, balling them up where no one but her could see them.

One in a million. 

Apparently that was her. 

With time and relative stability she slowly learnt to open up, finding a fresh start in Busan where she got to decide who she wanted to be. It would be all smiles and cheer from there, doing what she could to spread positivity to all around her. It fuelled a sense of pride to be able to bring people’s minds to ease, yet it simultaneously fuelled a separate worry:

If she stopped smiling… would things go back to how they were before? 

Though she is energetic and optimistic on the outside she harbours quite dark thoughts behind it all, rarely letting anyone get close enough to uncover how broken her confidence truly is.
