1. In what ways can AI generated videos/ audios be scary as mentioned by the speakers? Paraphrase in your own words.

An AI-generated music cover could be as great as a human does, what’s worse is that people who are being mimicked have nothing to do to protect their copyrights.

There are plenty of problems caused by data abuse, such as data storing and using issues. AI is making this kind of problem worse.

The most important is that we have been pushed into a new world where we can no longer get through what is exactly happening by watching images, videos and listening to audio. A moral issue reminds us that the digital world does not guarantee truth anymore.

2.Do you agree or disagree with the view that AI is indeed "scary"? Explain

I agree with the view that AI is scary. Because AI is so easy for everyone to get access, and it can generate fake information so easily that plenty of digital abuse is happening, from images to audio, and videos, even live shows can also be modified easily. Many people’s personal rights are being violated. The creator’s copyrights cannot be protected. Major public could not distinguish the AI-generated information, the whole society is losing trust. The development of AI puts the majority of us in a disadvantaged position. Overall, I believe that AI is scary so far.

3. What strategies do the speakers mention to detect AI generated content? Paraphrase in your own words.

There are some ways to recognize an AI product.

1. For a music video, we can think about the correlation between song and video content, because usually an AI product just randomly matches a video.

2. If a video is well matched by the selection, we can focus on the details such as the movement of the singer’s mouth and the lyrics.

3. We can identify the facticity by some other aspects such as the content poster, original source, and the accounts in the comments. This kind of information can help us to make a profile of the product and help us to distinguish it.

4. For an AI-generated image there will be always unusual aspects, such as too smooth skin, different colors in eyes, and inappropriate decorative accessories.

5.Summarize the main arguments of the video in 3-4 sentences.

The development of AI tech is affecting us in many areas, such as entertainment, job markets, and even politics by generating audio, videos and images. It results in a violation of personal rights and public information security. We need to improve the management to regulate the information world in the AI age.

Ethos

In my daily life educating my son, there are many times that I need to persuade him to change his mind. The most common thing that happened is about the diets he usually does not like food that he never tried before and also does not eat enough. So, I have to persuade him to try some new foods by telling him that the foods are good taste and great for health, most of the time he trusts me since I am his father and he knows that I am trustworthy, since it is natural and I always keep my promises that I made to him. But few of time it does not work, because he also has his own judgment.

Pathos

Sometimes I use this kind of strategy when dealing with price, when I buy something that I know there may be some room for price reduction, I may negotiate with the salespersons by telling them that it is a hard time now, it’s not easy to make money, or even I’m under certain pressure of buying this, most of the time this method works, because I am not lying, I am telling the truth, people can feel my emotion and the actual circumstance, they are usually persuaded more or less and will give a certain discount.

Logos

Sometimes when I talk to my friends about economic or political topics, such as the house price, for certain points we may have different opinions, so we both try to convince each other. To support my opinions, I usually mention some basic facts and fundamental theories, make some analogies, and use common sense to verify, even counter-questions if necessary. I do all these things to make my arguments more logical and factual, and to firm my opinions. But it is not easy to convince adult people when talking about topics like these since adults often have different perspectives and positions, which may lead to a different even opposite judgment.

Haijiao Zhang

N01721780

ESOL 100

• Summarize the video in 3-4 sentences. Remember write the first sentence in APA format.

Greta Thunberg (2019) on her speech at UN Climate Action Summit claimed that people are suffering from the whole ecosystemic collapsing; the world leaders are failing people by not taking sufficient efforts to improve the situation and caring about only economic result; young generations are not satisfied with the present solutions and will make changes in the future.

• What emotions do you think she is expressing most in this video?

I feel mostly sad and angry in the speech.

• What specific words and phrases does she use that makes you think she is expressing the emotions that you notice?

Sad:

“People are suffering, people are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing.”

“But no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that”

“You are failing us.”

Angry:

“We will be watching you”, multiple times of “How dare you”

“This right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up. And change is coming whether you like it or not.”

“then you would be evil. And that I refuse to believe.”

“I say, we will never forgive you.”

“And change is coming whether you like it or not.”

• Do you think her speech is persuasive based on her words, phrases, and emotional expressions? Why or why not?

Overall, her speech is not persuasive enough to me.

First of all, the climate problem is actually existing, but not as serious as she claimed, she is exaggerating the fact. Secondly, her argument about the present solutions is biased, it is unfair to say that the world leaders and scientists are not working properly to improve the situation and focusing only on economic growth, in fact, many countries in the world have significant improvement on ecosystem protecting, such as the countries in the European Union, Japan, China etc. Finally, the tone, words and expression of the speech are not peaceful, and her emotion is full of angry, which will make me skeptical about her arguments.

In conclusion, her arguments are exaggerating the issues, her comments and claims are much emotional, which make her speech not well persuasive to me.

1). What did you learn in this course that you think will be useful for you in your academic, personal, and professional lives?

In the course of ESOL 100, there are many modules that are very helpful to me, such as Module 3-Paraphrasing, which shows me what is appropriate for summarizing and paraphrasing, and the differences between them; Module 4 – 7, which demonstrate the strategies of assessing a text, by illustrating ETHOS-credibility, LOGOS-logic, and PATHOS-emotion we can build a clear structure of evaluating system, which helpful for not only my academic reading and writing, but also my personal habits of reading and communicating with others.

2). How do you think reflection and revision has helped to improve your writing skills? Please give an example to show how it has helped.

The reflection assignments and the following revision are very helpful for improving my writing skills. For example, Reflection #7 is about evaluating the article, by using CRAAP strategies, I have a clear path in my mind while writing, I can make a checklist, then do research and assess by steps. Compared to this, if I do not make the checklist, I may miss some important points, so it helps me to ensure comprehensive reading.

3). How do you think self-assessing your tasks /assignments has helped you to become aware of your strength and areas of improvement related to reading and writing? Please explain.

I think self-assessing the assignment it requires us a mandatory review of our reading and writing, we can check the bullet points one by one to figure out what needs to be improved, it is a good way to enhance the knowledge we have learned. And also, self-assessing also offers an opportunity to revise our assignment, which is helpful for better grades. So, self-assessing is very helpful for improving our English learning.

4). How did you enjoy the learning experience of ESOL 100? What did you like best and what can be improved?

The course ESOL 100 is much more helpful than I thought since the in-person class can force input and output, which is essential for students who lack self-regulation. The instructor is so responsible and kind, her erudition also impresses me. This course is a high-quality course.

Thank you very much for teaching us.

Haijiao Zhang
