The Wall is a brilliant album, filled with criticisms on society, and government, particularly from the perspective of the “boomer” generation, and the generation before; essentially those who were affected by WW2 and facism. It’s told in the form of a story or “show”, one such person being the main perspective, referred to as Pink, later on in the album. It begins with the introduction song “in the Flesh?”, then goes into a song which is basically foreshadowing; “The Thin Ice”, gives a sense of entrapment and drowning with its foreboding lyrics. The next song “Another Brick in the Wall, Pt.1”, is an anti-war song, from the perspective of the character as a child, who lost his father in the war. This is also the first time “The Wall'' is mentioned, I think the wall is an allegory for society and its structure/government, everyone is a “brick” in the “wall” of society. In this song, he says that all his father had left him was a brick in the wall. This I believe is, in a more literal sense, referring to those commemorative bricks they make veterans. Representative of accomplishment, all you are, all you have to show is a “Brick in the wall”. The next song “The Happiest Days of Our Lives” is about abuse in school, which was common in schools in the boomer generation and before. This draws into the next song “Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2”, where they continue to talk about school, how it’s meant to shape kids up and keep them in check, a way of controlling them and their thoughts. The song “Mother” comes after, from the perspective of the character as a kid, asking his mother for advice, he asks about the government and the war, tying into the next song “Goodbye Blue Sky”, which continues the anti-war theme, this one about the London blitz in particular. The next few, specifically “Empty Spaces”, “Young Lust”, “One of My Turns”, and “Don’t Leave Me Now”, seem to be about a break up or trying to get over one, as well as his frustration and overall dissatisfaction with life and other people, how they distract themselves with things like television and blind themselves with their want for more. There’s these ups and downs, he can’t seem to find joy in anything and eventually this depressive episode becomes a breakdown, in “Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 3”. Then goes into “Goodbye cruel world” which is clearly about suicide, he thinks death will help him escape “the wall”. “Hey You” and “Is There Anybody Out There” are a cry for help. “Nobody Home”, and “Vera” are about nobody being there for him. “Bring the Boys Back Home” is a recall to the war theme. “Comfortably Numb” is about drugs, he is given some kind of medication that is meant to fix him (shape him up so he will fall back in line with society), this leads into “The Show Must Go On” where he feels regret, before finally succumbing to whatever he was given. The song “In the Flesh” is about how society weeds out those who are different or who disobey. “Run Like Hell” is about police brutality. ”Waiting for the Worms” is about propaganda and abuse of power. “Stop” is about the treatment not working, Pink is imprisoned for not falling in line. In the next song, “The Trial”, because nothing has worked to “fix” him, they call him insane and berate him in front of everyone as an example. I think The Wall is a metaphor for falling in line with society, “together we stand divided we fall,”. It’s a warning, they use mostly examples of WW2 and Facism, but it applies to any kind of government that might go too far. And to “break the wall”, everyone needs to “unite”. The end of “Outside the Wall” loops around to the beginning of the album to say “Isn’t this where . . . we came in?”. Which I believe could be a statement about history repeating itself if you let it.
