MEASURE THE SOLAR DIAMETER
HANDS-ON ACTIVITY TO MEASURE THE SUN BY USING HOUSEHOLD MATERIALS.
I love this kind of activity, because is an inquiry based activity and requires very few material to investigate on the Sun radium.
The Sun moves across the sky at an approximately constant rate because of the rotation of the Earth. By measuring how fast the Sun moves, you can work out how big the Sun appears in the sky. All you need are some household items and about 30 minutes on a sunny day.

I think it's very important to teach how to start a research. Nowadays young people have a lot of informations but they aren't able to choose which are correct and useful . The teacher has to lead them to the right way, giving them a scientific topic, the right tools but above all involving them in research activity. The most important part of this work is the international dimension. They can talk to other students and discuss about the project they are studying .

Citizen Science is really a chance to involve the students in a real research project. I would like to use some of the ideas I've got learning in this module: Galaxy Zoo is by far my preferred one. Maybe a contest between students would be the way to introduce the different kinds of galaxy. I must let the ideas settle down to build a learning module on space.
Solar System 3D is a good one too, but it works only on android systems, as far as I got it well. It could be used for a research homework the students can do with their smartphones or tablet.
I think I'll definitely introduce citizen science in my science course, starting from the first year students.

In our
school I develop a wonderful activity named “Learning by Teaching”. Students of
my grades 9, 10 and 11 act as mentors for the students of my grades 6 and 7,
guiding them during different scientific activities. This year, my 9 graders
were mentors the 6 graders in Eratosthenes Experiment. It was very impressive
to watch them explaining the steps of the experiment to their younger
colleagues and helping them to perform the experiment.

My then 6
graders turned into confident and responsible mentors!

I teach Math in a high secondary level in Greece. Astronomy is not any more in the curricula but there is a school subject called "Project". I find very interesting Citizen Science! It would be an excellent idea to use some of the sources in which we have been introduced in a topic about Space. I am going to design such a project in the weekend for my students ages 15-16 for this semester!

I am thinking to collaborate with my colleagues of Foreign Language, Physics and Literature. I will use iSKY (http://www.space-awareness.org/en/games/isky/) to see the stars and let them know they are far away and try to understand what a light year actually means. The teaching unit ‘iSky: Smart Measurements of the Heavens’ inspires you to investigate the stars. Students could work using various apps on their smartphone (unfortunatelly not in the classroom as the use of cellphones is for bitten in Greek schools. They can use it for their homework ).They learn how to orientate based on the night sky, how to measure the altitude of the Sun, or how to calculate the circumference of the Earth. It is related with the science of astronomy, the Solar System, stars, mathematics.
Collaborating with a Physics teacher would be wonderful! Math and Physics have so many common things!Energy is one of the most important topics in Physics and this project could open a lot of citizen Science opportunities in relation to environment, renewable energy sources, future of the Earth. We can present the problems in graphs and study the equations of them. (http://www.space-awareness.org/it/activities/1502/lets-break-the-particles/)

Moreover I will definitely use games via Space Awareness website, for example http://www.space-awareness.org/en/games/feel-gravity/ to engage students.

Finally with my collegues of Literature we will get inspiration to write an essay about "Future of the Earth". At the end in Foreign Language Class we will search for songs in English about SKY, Space, Stars... and translate lyrics.

At the presentation event we can also sing these songs and perform an theatrical scene of a relevant for a few minutes .

This MOOC made clear to me that imagination and a good start point for activities can make possible any school subject combination! And even more!! Take part in a contest! as for example (http://www.odysseus-contest.eu/ )
Here is a Greek song: "When you're look down from high above " by Kostas Xatzis. with subtitles in english excellent to close the project about Citizen Science. Excellent music and excellent lyrics!

Students should become familiar with the basic concepts of the Universe and to be aware of time and spatial dimensions in order to inspire a new generation of space explorers.

Almost all of us imagine space as dreamy, mystical, interesting and we all wonder what is happening there. We would like to make students conscious of the events in space in a different points of view - scientific, artistic, religious. With this project, students will raise awareness about the distances in the universe, the different space objects, planets and stars, space exploration and the impact on our daily lives and use their creativity in artistic way.
https://live.etwinning.net/projects/project/130831

Space week has just been in School. Although I am not teaching the topic space, I wanted all years to get a flavor of it and what research is happening. I introduced the story of Rosetta and date the mission completed. I opened the floor to the students to what they wanted to research but the topic had to be space related. My students choose to research the planets with one student wanting to research more about the Rosetta Mission and what data was collected to date. Another student choose to research Spudnik. I was happy- my students were enthusiastic and were asking many questions.
